Hi all, I'm trying to find out more about my great grandfather. His name is Sebastian Uy Quilin (sometimes spelled Uy Quililing). This is his baptized Filipino name but I never found out his Chinese name with Chinese characters. Her daughter (my grandmother) is still well at 93 years old. I haven't interviewed her in detail but any other initial information on him will help. He was from Amoy, China and settled in Romblon, Romblon.
A historian from the University of the Philippines has referred me to a book which has some information about him and his little store in Romblon before the war but the library was closed when I visited and might be back again next week.
Any information will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Jpgonzales, If you wish to read the Chinese characters please select "View", "Encoding", "More" and "Unicode (UTF-8)". I believe your surname is Uy which could be黄. In pinyin it would be Huang. In Cantonese it would be Wong. In the Southern Fujian dialect, it would be Ng, Wee, Ooi or Oei. At siyigenealogy.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=names&action=display&thread=752&page=11Re: Common Ancestor with Surname Chen « Reply #154 on May 23, 2012 » is a pedigree line for that surname done for a friend of mine. I have two more, one for a Hakka from Quangdong and another from Hainan Island. In my recent trip to my ancestral village in Yongchun, Fujian, I brought back a set of four books for Huang surname zupu for Yongchun Province; so they would not be of help. If you wish to trace your ancestry, you will need much more information than what you had provided. However if you wish to more about that surname, I could be provide you with some materials. My favorite genealogy poem is the one adopted by quite many clan of that surname. It was written by Huáng Qià o ShÄn (黄å³å±±), conferred "Marquis of a Thousand Households" 万户侯 by Emperor Zhaozong of Táng (dynasty) å”æ˜å®— and subsequently Vice-Minister of Works 工部ä¾éƒŽ, was born on 871 AD in Kantóu Village (åŽå¤´æ‘), Heping Town (和平镇), Shaowu City (邵æ¦å¸‚) of Fujian Province (ç¦å»ºçœ). He had altogether 21 sons through his three wives: Shangguan (上官), Wu (å´) and Zheng (郑). After the fall of the Tang Dynasty (å”æœ) in 907 AD, China plunged into a period of wars and chaos, in what was known as the Five Dynasties Period, Wu Dai (五 代) ( 907 to 960 AD). In 951 AD, he instructed his 18 younger sons and their families to live separately for the eternal preservation of the lineage, keeping the eldest son from each of his three wives and their families at Shaowu (邵æ¦). Bidding farewell to them, he wrote a poem, which subsequently adopted as the Ancestry Generation Poem zu shi (祖诗), below: éªé©¬ç™»ç¨‹å¾€å¼‚方,任从胜地立纲常, 年深外境犹å¾å¢ƒï¼Œæ—¥ä¹…他乡å³æ•…乡, æœå¤•èŽ«å¿˜äº²å‘½è¯ï¼Œæ™¨æ˜é¡»è祖宗香, 惟愿è‹å¤©åž‚庇佑,三七男儿总炽昌.Jumping onto excellent steeds and getting ready for other lands, Follow the ways of future lands when you are living there; After many years that would be your own lands, Wherever chosen your roots plant, that will be your new homeland;
Take heart your old father's advice from morn till night, Remember to burn incense for ancestry on dawn and twilight; My only wish is for God’s protection to you provide, But I expect the twenty-one of you, uphold our ancestral pride. Philip

Hi Jpgonzales, Maybe Doug could explain to you how to get at the Chinese characters. Anyway you should be able to read them from below but you would not be able to copy the digitized characters: Below is another chart I had done for another friend of mine of that surname. He is the descendant of the 6th son of the third wife of Huang Qiao Shan while that I referred you previously is from the 2nd son of the second wife. Philip

Hi. I am trying to help my daughter in her family tree project. My grandmother is Lux Uy Murphy from Romblon and I remember her mentioning that her mother's name is Gaudencia Uy and her grandfather is named Sebastian Uy. Could this be the same person? I only know this much so any additional info regarding the Uy family is much appreciated.
Many thanks.

Hi. I accidentally found this thread when I googled my great grandfather's name. My grandfather, Pacifico Morada Uy was the youngest son of Sebastian Quilin Uy. He died in 2008. I'm still in contact with few of our relatives. If you happen to visit Romblon, please look for Tita Uy's Store.
