Fay Chee, Doug Joe posted a link a few weeks ago about Chinese is difficult even for the Chinese. This is one such occasion for me. Speaking for myself, the writing is beyond my capability. It is in the running style calligraphy of the learned scholars.I can identify a few characters but not enough to make sense of.It could be the author's own work or a quote which I am completely unfamiliar with. There must be person or persons in our midst who could enlighten us.

Why (classical) Chinese Is So d**n Hard click Scroll to section 6 For the genealogist, differentiating the different dialects, then simplified vs traditional script, and running across classical Chinese, along with dealing with phonetic spelling, makes the field even harder.

I found this forum because I want to know the origin of my surname 冼. My my ancestors migrated to Vietnam from China, but no one in my family have any idea when. When I was a refugee living in Hong Kong in the late 70's and early 80, the HK government phonetically spelled our last name as 'Sen'. After my Dad discovered that he had a long lost cousin living in the US, we had to change our last name to 'Senh' to my match my uncle's so that he can sponsor us to States. We arrived to Seattle, WA in 9/1980, when I was just 10 years old. From googling my surname, I found a Wikipedia article regarding the Shen state. In that article, it mentioned that one of the Shen's (Shen Rui) was suspected of to assassinating the Qin emperor. He fled south to the Guandong area and changed his surname to 冼 and married a Baiyue native. It also mentioned that south of Guandong area is where most of the 冼 clans live. It is an interesting read. Thank you for creating this forum.

Hello Steve! This post is my third attempt because I need to install the current App. I have not chimed in for some time but have been making progress with distant family, thanks to finding them via this forum. The members are so knowledgeable and with group effort have been of so much help to me and many others. I go back to read the posts just to learn about the siyi families, culture and heritage. So the Sen/Sin family clan was and is part of the Ping Ling Village not too far from Jiangmen. My father and some cousins came to the USA but others, like many siyi region families landed elsewhere. Later this week I will Skype or G Hangout cousins in Hong Kong. Contact me in the Message section and I will have more info to share.

For those seeking for the origin of the 冼 (Xian) surname, the following link provides some clue (https://zhidao.baidu.com/question/547367503.html?&mzl=qb_xg_1&word= ). I am not a 100% fluent in reading Chinese characters, but I can make about 50% of it. Since our surname is so rare, if you are a 冼, then we are somehow related .

Hello. This thread just moved up and caught my attention. Sien is my mother's family who have kindly sent me a copy of their ZuPu. They are not SiYi, but in another dialect area to the west. I don't know if those of you looking for surname history already have things like this -- here's two pages, let me know if you need me to post more.

jdiep, I have included the Shen Totem /Tuteng ( family coat of arms ), a map of the Shen clan distribution in China, and a couple accounts of the origin of the Shen surname Henry Shen's Totem Interpretation [Interpretation] Sinking in the oracle bone inscriptions is like a cow and sheep sinking into the water. The compilation of the book changed from the water, the sound of "冘", "冘" is the way people walk. Zhou Wenwang's tenth son, Ji Zai, was recommended by Zhou Gongdan as Sikong of Zhou's emperor due to his meritorious deeds. Later, Zhou Chengwang sealed his uncle Ji Zai in Shen State, also known as Tang State. Ji Zai is also known as Ran Ji Zai. Tanyou wrote Ran. In ancient times, Ran and Shen had the same pronunciation. In the Spring and Autumn Period, after the State of Shen was destroyed by the State of Cai, Ji Zai's offspring fled to the State of Chu. His grandson, Shen Yinxu, first retired in Lingshan, and later Shi Chu was Zuo Sima. Shen Zhuliang, the son of Yin Xu, was hereditary as Sima, and his food was collected in Ye (now Ye County, Henan). For example the first Shen ancestor that had the Shen surname, the first Shen ancestor to migrate to a province, or the first Shen ancestor to migrate to a particular county, or even the first Shen ancestor of a particular village. Hi Chane, My surname is 冼 (Xian (China), Sin (HK), Syn (Singapore), Hsien (Taiwan) or Senh (Vietnam) is not the same as 沈 (Shen). According to the information that I have gathered from the internet, we 冼 clans derived from 沈. You can find additional information by googling the surname or click on this link => zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%86%BC%E5%A7%93. I hope I have answered your question.
