80 miles from Canton - Lap used to ride his bike between the 2 places, crossing 5 rivers by ferry, on the way. The 2 towers and the bridge are still there, as a reminder of his bike rides. There was nothing much else there in those days of the 60s.

I do know the place well Helen. Last month, I was meeting my party from Australia everyday at the foyer of the Fuhua Hotel. Have meals there also.
The one above The Fuhua is a new shopping arcade and eateries. I lament the old buildings that were demolished to make way for it. There is a big ferris wheel. I took my group of young people from the village to the Venice Steakhouse for a treat two years ago. I always like to entertain, eating out, giving people a treat they so look forward to. Most of my expenses are on food.
This is 石岐 Shekki or Shiqi ( yuk) of course. you are on Sunwen Xilu the pedestrian mall. Did you see the commerce museum?

The ferris wheel. Your place is great Douglaslam. We enjoyed staying at the Sheraton. Lap has fond memories of here, during the mid 60s.

Helen, the Sheraton is fairly new. There is also the Hilton not far off. Most Chinese people still prefer the old Fuhua. It has the best location. I once entertained my party from the village, to have a buffet dinner on a Saturday night. It was expensive and sub-standard. I vow never to go back again.
When in Canton, I stayed at my favourite hostel by the river side. If this was LC's first visit since the '60s, then he would have no chance of recognise the place.
More stories?

LC went to Zhongshan about 2 years ago for Ching Ming. Went with a group of NZ Zhongshan people. We had an Argentinian on our tour - he went there 28 years ago - and it was all fields, he said. Can't belive it's changed so much.
LC said he made frequent trips in 60s,planning the great escape. Was arrested by your police 5 times, and chucked into jail. That's why he didn't end up leaving from there. He had a great friend living there - so he could visit him, on his travels from Canton.
