Great photos Helen. Some of them I have seen before, you might notice at least three of the glass plates are wrong sides up because the Chinese characters are not shown the right way.

Whilst I was in China, because of the time difference, I found myself watching a few of the good documentaries on China's CCTV. The commentaries in Chinese were exceptionally informative. One episode was on 19th. and early 20th. century photographers in China. John Thomson was one such notable. Go to this link for some of his stunning shots of China of old.
