Hi,
I wish I knew more about my family in Asia. It was only by accident that I discovered my Asian genetic connection from my GGM. As I was dealing wit her alias of Kot Choy or Goot Choy, I assumed that Choy was the family name. Looking at the funeral attendees, and find quite a few Choas, I connected her that way. It could be wrong on my part. There's no way to know or sure. I wish I had paid closer attention as a child but I doo recall the mention of the name Choa by my GF and my mother. It was a name that was repeated often enough in our household that I recognized it.
My GGM seems to have been kept as a secret, her name not mentioned and even in her death and affairs she was referred to only as "G" Property was held initially as Mr Kot Choy, but in 1903 it was placed in a trust between Kot Choy and May Hunter ( my GFs sister ) A few years ago I found death notices in newspapers which linked the names Anne Hunter alias Kot Choy, to my GF and his siblings as their mother.
My GF was active in the rubber trade later and I have wondered if he had more connections there than he let on. He was a director of two rubber estates in Malaya, Ayer Tawah and Sungala, and I know he spent time in Malaya. His daughter Nora also worked for the Rubber Institute in KL prior to WW2 but left in early 1941 to go to the USA with my mother. My search for my GGM true identity is an on-going mystery, but whoever she was, I know she was at least 50% Asian and more likely a higher percentage than that.
I appreciate your input and I'm sorry I've become lackadaisical. I promise I will be more attentive for now on!
