We are also holding a screening at the Huntington Library in San Marino on Aug. 31. Good show, recommended. Glad to have known Tyrus and his daughter Kim. Very generous person and family.

Tyrus’s life mirrored the experience of many Siyi immigrants. Born in a small village in Taishan County (北坑堡南安里) at the end of the Qing dynasty, he came to America as a young boy with a “paper name.” He was forced to spend time at the Angel Island detention center near San Francisco, where he had to undergo rigorous interrogation before he could enter the United States and reunite with his father. Later, he struggled to make a living and experienced discrimination in the workplace. Ultimately, because of his hard work and determination—as well as his extraordinary artistic talent—he was able to succeed.
Here is the trailer for the documentary to be shown on PBS on 9/8:
In 1937 Tyrus married Ruth Ng Kim from Bakersfield, CA. She was the youngest sister of my paternal grandfather.
