There is another DNA site where you can upload your 23andMe or Ancestry raw data to for free. It is at www.gesedna.com It is from China and gives a more detailed breakdown of your Chinese ancestry composition based on region such as North China, South China, Southwest China, Northwest China, Mongolia, Northeast China, etc. To upload your data, you first must register selecting a login id and password. After you have successfully registered, you e-mail your data to dna@gesedna.com and include your user name, phone number, etc. The site is all in Chinese. So, if you can't read Chinese, you should use Google Chrome and set it to translate the site to English. The results usually takes 1-2 business days. The results also includes genetic traits related to cognitive abilities, athletic abilities, social skills, etc.

Hi twnxn,
Thanks for sharing. It seems very interesting; very similar to wegene. Have you used the service? And have you found that your overall ethnicity results matched those of the original service you used? Or did it bring new insights that you previously did not know about?

Hi twnxn, Thanks for sharing. It seems very interesting; very similar to wegene. Have you used the service? Or did it bring new insights that you previously did not know about? - Jeremy Hi Jeremy, The interesting thing about Gesedna is that the breakdown, at least with the Chinese part is based on geography. On one Facebook group I am part of, one person states that he believes the results are based on your ancestry from Neolithic Period. As for my background-I was born and grew up in the US. However, both of my parents are from Taiwan. Both side of the family has been in Taiwan for at least 200 years. I know my father's side per his genealogy, came to Taiwan some 215-220 years ago during the middle part of the Qing Dynasty moving to Taiwan from Zhangzhou, Fujian, China. My family identifies as "Minnan", "Hoklo", "Fulao" meaning Southern Fujianese in ancestry. If you study the history, Minnan people are supposed to be mix of Northern Han who migrated south during the Jin and Tang Dynasties, but they mixed with the non-Han local females. People may refer to them as Minyue. So the breakdown in Gesedna does make sense of essentially, a mix of North China/Northwest China and South China/Southwest China. There is smaller amounts of Northeast China. And even Mongolia. One person explained that when the Northern Chinese moved to Southern China during the Jin and Tang Dynasties, many could have some Mongol or Manchu mix which could explain the Mongol percentage and even Northwest China percentage. I have also uploaded to WeGene last year- which just says I am a mix of Northern and Southern Han, but does not go into more specifics than that.

Very interesting to hear your background! China has such a vast diversity of ethnic groups that it doesn't surprise me if a little mix of everything comes up. Reason I was asking is because both 23 and me and wegene gave me a 14% south east Asian marker, but gesedna has me 0. 14% sounds like a significant number, but it is hard to tell what is accurate when you get varying results. Wegene also gave me 8% Japanese when 23 and gesedna gave me 0. It could possibly be that those two percentages are just statistical noise?

Jeremy,
My WeGene results also gave me 1.11% Korean. Prior to adjusting their algorithm, they showed me at 11% Korean. Korean does not show up on my 23andMe results. 23andMe has me essentially mostly Chinese with 2% Southeast Asian. While Ancestry has me at 92% East Asian and 8% Polynesian (which I could interpret to mean Southeast Asian). But, the Southeast Asian component probably has lots of overlap with Southern Chinese or even Taiwanese Plains Aborigines genes, as a component share common ancestry with Southeast Asian. As to why I show Korean- it could be an overlap with Northern Han. Also, the Northern Han could have mix of people related to Mongolian, Tungustic and even Korean people. I always joke with my wife about my 1.11% Korean results. My wife is Korean-American.

twnxn,
I went to the GeseDNA site and translated this site into English since I do not speak or read Chinese. I have three questions
1. Is it still possible to upload my raw DNA data file for free, if so where do I go on the site to do so?
2. Does GeseDNA have a relative matching tool and a way to connect with those with whom I share DNA?
3. How many users are in the GeseDNA database and do they live throughout China or primarily come from one Province?
I hope to hear from you soon?
Mei
