FayChee was very fortunate since her father's headstone had all the information, name and village in Chinese.

I got in touch with my brother in law and he says that it is the correct village. I am asking for more information from him. Here is a photo of my father in law in the village in 1998. You can see that the buildings match the photo in the above post. I will continue reading and learning and looking for more information. Thanks everyone for helping me. Barbara

So Barbara, now that we know that YueShan is the correct Village, if your brother-in-law can read Chinese, he may be able to take a look at the 23 pages of family trees in the Zupu for YueShan and identify which is most likely to be his/your family tree? Do you want to ask him?

Are there any other family members or friends of your father-in-law, grandfather, his siblings, etc, who can read Chinese and may identify a few names in the family trees?
Where is your father-in-law or his relatives buried? Can you get someone to take pictures of their tombstones??
If you can get more pictures of your father-in-law, you may want to try and contact someone in the Village who may remember him or know his relatives still living in the village ......they may be able to tell you his Ancestral lineage there. I believe that you can pay someone to go to your relatives village and get your family information.

Looking back at your first post, there are 3 sons with the common name of 'See' in it...See Kue, See Kai, See Git..........it is possible the 'See' is their generational name......also, their birth years are around my dad's birth year, so they may be Generation 25. Your first document, 4th line says that father's name is Soo Hoo You Jung, my grandfather's generational name is 'You' (You De/Yau Tak), so You Jung may be Generation 24 in the Zupu.........

FayChee, Good observation as always!
In the Soo Hoo clan texts which FayChee shared with me years ago, there is a generational poem comparison chart.
Within the 22nd gen., I have highlighted 3 characters, from left to right: - 貞 Zing is used by my Soo Hoo great-grandmother's branch, this is my 4x great-grandfather's generation
- 樹 See is used by the 小海 Xiaohai and 月山 Yueshan/Yuet Shan Village branch, this is Soo Hoo Kong's children's generation
- 國 Kwok is used by FayChee's 大津 Dajin Village branch, this is her 3x great-grandfather's generation
In the page from a recent genealogy that FayChee shared, it seems that there are only two 樹 See generation descendants recorded in Yuet Shan Village - this is probably due to depopulation of the village as people migrated. However, Soo Hoo Kong's generation, the one above that, offers some clues - there are two sibling listed: - 振光 Gin Kong, corresponding to Soo Hoo Kong's name in the immigration record
- 源瑞 Yuen Sui, corresponding to Soo Hoo Kong's brother's name who was listed as residing in Rutherford, Cal. in the immigration record
Futhermore, their mother is listed as 余氏 Yee Shee in this genealogy, corresponding to the mother's name in the immigration record
It took a bit of analyzing and connecting of dots, but it seems we have a potential match. Could there possibly be tombstones, ancestral altars, or names on letters/photographs that can provide confirmation?

JasonWu! I am once again amazed and flabbergasted at how knowledgeable you are in putting together the tiniest pieces of these almost unsolvable puzzles! The page that I posted was just a random pick from the 23 pages having the characters for Yue Shan!
Last night I was thinking that if Barbara's father-in-law had visited their Village in 1998, than he may have or at least know the family tree. Since the brother-in-law can not read/speak Chinese, it is possible that he does not recognize the book as a Zupu or Jiapu.....it could be sitting in his house and he just doesn't know it...
Barbara, you can click on the two images that Jasonwu posted, download and/or print them out. Then send them to your brother-in-law and ask him to show them to other friends/family of your father-in-law to see if they are a possible match for your family tree....
Good Luck!

I just went back through all the posts here and must give credit to 'Merantau' ....on Feb 4th, he came to the same conclusions about the generation names as I did, but I must have overlooked his post before coming to the same conclusions several days later!
Sorry Merantau, please accept my apology and continue to help us with these challenging puzzles.....

Wow you guys are amazing. When my father in law came from China he went to live with his uncle Chau Soo Hoo in Rutherford CA. I will sent the page to my brother in law and see what he says.
Thank you !!!

A question for JasonWu. What immigration records are you looking at?
Thanks Barbara

FayChee, You are right - there are observations that Merantau made which we had seemed to overlook. Merantau, thank you for the help early on! Barbara, The record which I was referencing was the first image that you shared in this thread, titled "Born in United States," in which Soo Hoo Kong's personal specifics are listed on line 4. Below is a recap of how these details compare to those of the family on the page from the genealogy which FayChee shared with us:
| in the Immigration record, line 4
| in the Genealogy shared by FayChee
|
| Individual | Soo Hoo Kong | 振光 Gin Kong
| a potential match
| His father
| Soo Hoo Yow Jung | 宗大 Dung Ai, married name 開仕 Hoi Shee
| not a match, perhaps known by a different name or a paper son?
| His mother
| Yee Shee | 余氏 Yee Shee
| a match
| His brother
| Soo Hoo Yuen, in Rutherford, Cal.
| 源瑞 Yuen Sui | a potential match

Regarding the mention of Thlam Fau, I believe this refers to 三埠 the "Three Harbours." They are three centuries-old port towns along the Tanjiang River, namely 長沙埠 Cheung Sar Fau, 新昌埠 Sun Cheong Fau, and 荻海埠 Ed Hoi Fau, which were amalgamated in the 1950's so that this urban area at the convergence of several rivers could become the new county seat of Hoiping. In order to travel to the town of 赤坎 Chek Ham (Chikan), which is the town that administrates the village of Yuet Shan, one would have to pass through Thlam Fau to get there, because Chek Ham is located upstream from Thlam Fau.
