Hey Jess. I just sent you a private message with a link to some 23andme promotion that I received via email. It says there's a $30 off deal for memorial day, which is cheaper than the educational discount itself.

I am sorry to say that a mitochondrial haplogroup is very unlikely to help you find relations. The mitochondrial genome is small and offers much poorer resolution genetically than the Y-haplogroup. N9a1 will be very widespread.
If you are hoping for genetics to help, you'll get yourself tested and hope for good autosomal matches outside China that may have an established genealogy back to China. It's a very long shot - if you are ridiculously lucky, perhaps your relations in Thailand may have tested too and you find them. Services inside China would be more useful but it's not clear to me how accessible they are from outside or what privacy issues may arise. Since you mention your Dad is Scottish, it will be pretty easy to distinguish your Mum's matches from his by location and the match's history.
Good luck.

Thank you! Yes, it is very easy to decifer which DNA comes from my father and which DNA comes from mother. Most of my matches are on my father's side. I have a few from what I believe is from my mother's side but there are such small matches, I'm not sure it is a real or false match.
