Hello, I was wondering if anyone here knows how to research Chinese ancestors that went to French Guiana? There don't seem to be any records on familysearch, ancestry etc. Maybe there are other sources I haven't found yet?

Hi Jen:
I did a Google search of Chinese websites and I didn't find much about the history of the Chinese in French Guiana, where there is still a sizable Chinese community. I do see that the Chinese first went there in 1898 and most are Cantonese people of the Hakka dialect group and originating in Dongguan, Bao'an, and Huizhou. There is an Overseas Chinese Association in Cayenne 卡宴華僑公所;look on the web for the Facebook page for the Association FA KIAO. I don't know if anyone there would have any useful information. Also, the people there would speak French rather than English. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Hi gckimm, thanks so much for helping. I'm trying to find details of my grandfathers brother who went and lived there. He was from Guangdong. I'll try contacting the Chinese association. I was looking to see if there was one but didn't find any before, but it seems to exist after all. Hope they got records similar to the CBA in Jamaica.
