Hi All,
So, I have moved on to do some research on my great-great-grandmother on my paternal grandmother's, maternal grandmother's side. She was apparently a 羅 Law/Lo/Lor from Hoiping, but that is all I know. It seems though to be a pretty rare surname in Hoiping with only seven villages located in 月山鄉 Yuetshan Hueng.
I connected with a DNA match on 23andme who is a Law and she says that her father is from Lock Hock Tsun, but she isn't sure where it is or what the characters are. Can anyone guess what the characters for this village might be?
Is anyone familiar with this area or these Law clan villages? I am looking to trace back without any names of ancestors, so it may be difficult, but if I can narrow down the villages I could pay a visit next time I go back.
Thanks everyone!
- Jeremy

Thanks for your reply. I saw all of the villages in the villagedb but none of them correspond to Lock Hock. I was able to get two photos from my DNA matche's zupu but I do not think it is of very much help. Maybe I am missing something. Do you see anything I may be missing in regards to the surname or village name?

Sorry, Can't help. May be fellow Lor clan with knowledge of the Yutsan village area might provide insight to the location.

Hi Jeremy:
I have searched Chinese webpages with the most likely characters for "Lock Hock" Village and have come up empty. It does seem that Yuetshan Heung (now Yuetshan Town) is the center of the Law clan in Hoiping; I even found a reference to a "Genealogy of the Law Clan of Yuetshan Town 月山鎮羅氏族譜" (not the genealogy, just a reference).
If the family you contacted knows the name of their village, I imagine someone in that family either knows the characters or knows where they might be. On a family grave, perhaps? How about seeing if you can get a photo of the title page of that genealogy from the family? Title pages could tell you a location and/or an ancestor's name.
Sorry I could not do more. Good luck!
Greg

No worries, cdnheadtaxdata. Thanks for trying. Thanks Greg for looking! It has been hard to get any real information from the DNA matches. They really don't know much at all and they don't even know the Chinese character for the surname. When I asked them if it was 羅 they said yes, but just a few days ago I was sent a gravestone and the last name on there is 勞, no village name though... So I think I have been barking up the wrong tree... 🤦♂️ I think I originally thought it was 羅 because it was the closest Law area to my grandmother's village.. Now to research for a totally different surname... haha
