I am hoping that someone would be able to help me locate my ancestral village. I understand that Qinghu Du 清湖都 has now been broken up into many new districts which made it a really tough task. My ancestors were known to be tall; most of them being at least 6 feet or more. Great, great grandfather's name: 趙丕原 Great grandfather's name: 趙善優 Grandfather's name: 趙汝賅 My family lineage follows the 趙光義 generation poem name sequence. Anyway, any information or even clues on where to start would be appreciated. A zupu 族谱 (族譜) or 家谱 would really help! Many thanks!

hello - I just joined this board. My roots are hoysan (taishan, fow shek) although born and raised in Victoria BC. My legal last name growing up was phonetically spelt and pronounced "Jew" in hoyshan. (I recognize the character as I went to Chinese school for six years) My parents were "older" than the norm by the time I was born (Dad-65 and Mom-42). I even have a younger sister, and we were raised very traditionally - no questions asked, no answers given. My parents are gone now and I deeply regret not asking more of my roots, my ancestors. I am now digging around looking for more information about my father's village, and hopefully to visit that part of china once covid is over. Is anyone else interested ?

Hoysanggirl,
Assume your surname is 趙 Zhao/Jiuh (Jew) since you are posting under this surname inquiry. Goto the Village DB (https://siyigenealogy.proboards.com/post/new/3138) and click on Jew surname and under entry #7 find 浮石鄉 (Fow Shek Heung)and if you click on [map] you will see its location which also identifies this heung consists of 14 villages. So you need to know the name of the village _ you will probably find this if you look at father's tombstone assuming it contains Chinese characters. Hope this is of help.

Hoysanggirl,
Can you upload a photo of your father's tombstone to confirm his ancestral village? Thanks.

You may find this parade organized by 浮石 interesting. It was uploaded to YouTube when there was a size limit which is why it's in seven parts.
浮石 is a big village. It has a few thousand residents. The village itself is divided into zones or areas. You'll see this in the video.

Hi, I have the Zupu from Fow shek. It is nearly 1000 pages. This encompasses many villages since several were later untied to form todays (at 2005 when I was there) village. It's a nice village with great people, so happy to see outsiders. They have a village historian there, who was helpful in locating the property of the man I was looking for, the family leaving in the 1840s to US. There was however no house left.

I have looked in the Zupu for those names, have confirmed that is the correct order of names from your great to father, however there are so many. I will keep looking and hopefully will find them. If you had one even older it would help as there are many of your great grandfather's generation missing from the Zupu, but may be a little better further back. The book begins with the original Zhaos (Chew, Joe, Jew etc) that lived there. Shi Mui Tai was the ancient grandmother living there and buried on top of the hill. Referred to as Yuangong Yuangong. It has a history of the two brothers who first lived there in the later 13th century, remnants of a prince of Song who gave his two sons to his General for safe keeping. The Prince died in war and the boys lived with General (Gong I believe) changing their name, but later changed their name back to Zhao and one brother stayed in Fow Shek the other crossed over the river to Zhongshan and began his descendants in that place. The book begins in the 13th century to present (in a few instances). There are 34 generations in the book.

Do you know the whole generational poem? That might be easier to follow the lineage and find the right person.

Hi, Happy CNY!
Chew, Ton Tai
My grandfather arrived in Victoria BC in 1918 and settled in Vancouver BC.
Thanks to Henry, I have found my grandfather’s ancestral village. Has anyone been to the following 3rd subdivision in Fow Shek?
居仁 Kui Yan / Ju Ren
aka
灶背 Jo Pui / Zao Bei
Is this division included somewhere in the shared YouTube video in this thread?
I cannot read Chinese.
Sincere Thanks in advance!
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
I can not speak or read Chinese either, but I cut and paste the chinese characters for Fow Shek/Fushi into the YouTube Search box and this video came up. They are speaking in Chinese only. The titled translated into: "Taishan Baixiao: Hello everyone, I finally have time to edit the video of Fushi Village, Toishan Town, Taishan City, Guangdong Province. Please follow me to listen to the story of Fushi. "Episode 1"@johnliu8953".......
Sorry I can find anything on Zao Bei.
