Kwangtung, Guangdong, Shandong, Zhejiang Beijing, Shanghai area is what my DNA results say. I recently had a DNA match, which I know is my 1/2 brothers, grandson, which we have connected on Facebook. He informs me that my father ( his great grandfather ) last name is not Lee it is Shek. That his grandfather ( my 1/2 brother ) all came to California ( not sure when ) and they stayed there while my dad and his dad came to Canada .I believe this was through the paper boy way. I know my dad lived in Hong Kong for a bit before leaving for the States. I also have a 1/2 sister who stayed in Hong Kong . which I have 1 nephew and 2 nieces still there, last name Yan ( unable to find yet ) I have only a couple pieces of my grandfathers mail written in Chinese. Wondering if anyone can help me. i was given a phone number to one of my nieces in Hong Kong I believe. and tried to call. It is not working, so I am not sure if it is functional still. My main thing is I am trying to learn about my grandfather known in Canada as Yick Him Lee and my father as Pon Moon Lee ..I don't know how I should search this.. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Carol,
Welcome to the forum!
If your father came to Canada prior to the late 1940s and after 1923 there is a possibility that he came here as a paper son, unless he was a merchant or a student. If you post pictures of your grandfather's letters/mail, someone can possibly identify some names and or places/village names. It is very hard to do research when you don't have any Chinese characters. However, you can use the names Yick Him Lee and Pon Moon Lee to search the genealogy databases, familysearch.org (free), or ancestry.com (paid) to find immigration records, ship manifests or other documents chronicling your grandfather and great-grandfather's immigration to Canada.
If your family's real surname is Shek, which could be 石, then it is not likely that your family hailed from one of the 4 counties. Shek is not a common surname in the siyi area. Does your half-brother know where your family is from? What county and what village? Your niece and nephew are from the Yan/Gin (甄) clan.
Let us know if you find/have any other information that can help us help you in your search.
- Jeremy
