My experience as a contribution to the forum.
(i) there is presently no hotel operating in gongyi. lots of hotels in taicheng.
(ii) a new bus terminal has been constructed in Shenzhen, so all the bad experience of alighting and boarding and realighting and reboarding are history. Now, after alighting at the terminal, one will cleared the HK immigration and then moved on to the next section to clear the Chinese immigration & customs before boarding the bus again (could be a different bus from the one which you first came with) to your destination. Bus ride to TaiCheng is 4 hours (provided no traffic accidents - encounter 3 along the way which caused much traffic jam, and thus whole journey was delayed by about an hour).
(iii) it is very much cheaper to take the HK/China bus from the HK island (ie boarding point is in HK island/Kowloon) than taking the bus that boards from the airport terminal. there is daily bus departure unlike the ferry that is on alternate days. i could buy a bus ticket to gongyi from the hong kong airport eventhough my boarding point is at Prince Edward MTR
(iv) plenty of local buses plying the road btw taicheng and gongyi (and i guess the rest of towns) ~cheap mode of transport
(iv) no taxis in gongyi - i need to hop onto motorbikes with male riders to get from one village to another. fare is pretty cheap too. you can get their cellphone numbers and call them to pick you up at your location.
(v) not sure what else i can share, but it has been a good experience. I found my grandfather's village, found some living relatives, located the zupu, and visited the burial grounds. Didnt have the same luck in trying to find my grandmother's village though! more homework needed. thanks everyone for all your contribution to this post.
