Hi Kevin,
I wish to propose for consideration a couple new Subjects for next year:
1 Clan Progenitor References:
The names of clan ancestors at the province, county, and town levels are very useful as nodes for linking clan lineages. I volunteer to serve as the Moderator.
2 Software for Chinese Genealogy:
Many people want to know which software is most appropriate to preserve and share their Chinese lineages. I believe "Joeysun" is willing to serve as the Moderator
3 DNA Chinese Genealogy:
If there is interest, I have a relative, who is a Chinese genealogy aficionado and retired medical doctor, also interested in DNA analysis - who may be willing to serve as a moderator.
Please respond and advise if you will create these new Subjects that will contain various "threads". Thanks.
Henry

Dear Kevin & Henry,
I am willing to moderate the Software for Chinese Genealogy unless someone else has interest. Then, I am willing to co-moderate.

Hi Henry and Doug,
Thank you for your suggestions and volunteered to act as moderators. I'm more than happy to set these up. Looking forward to postings there.
Henry, once your relative has signed up I'll make him moderator for the DNA board.
Thanks again and happy postings.
Kevin

Dear Moderator,
May I propose that the present shortcut to viewing the latest ten newest posting be increased to see the latest newest posting to say twenty newest postings.
This will allow those who do not access this very informative and helpful forum on a daily basis. Posting have increased on this increasingly popular forum and sometimes there are more than ten new postings.
I realise there are limitations to tweaking this free forum but maybe this can be done without too much trouble.

Joe, Kevin, Henry et al, I agree. Even for the crazy genie like myself who enjoys watching the passing parade of postings, sometimes I miss seeing a few new postings which turned out to be quite interesting. Regards, Ah Gin

Good suggestion. Unfortunately Proboard does not see it this way. There is no provision to adjust this setting even with the paid version. One solution is to host it elsewhere. The question is can we take all our postings with us? Anybody?

Kevin et al, Think let's be pragmatic about this. It's a nice to have. Changing horses is a bit dramatic. I can imagine the headache that comes with moving house. Regards, Ah Gin

I rather regret bringing up the suggestion of being able to see more than ten recent posts at the click of a mouse: this was triggered by the increasing amount of postings; by the invitation to send in suggestions; and also I am active on other free vibrant Forums (such as pilgrimage-to-santiago.com) which have a few pages of recent active subjects which can brought up with a mouse click.
With such limitations probably this is one reason why the Suggestion Forum has not taken off in the Siyipgenealogy website as in the other subjects in the Forum. In the future I am sure that this limitation will be overcome as in the IT world software is evolving daily.

I would like to recommend we have a FAQ section. This could be a repository for links to prior post, as well as new posting by the 'old timers' who have a lot of experience.
I would recommend a thread on how to read gravestones, a thread about surnames, paper names, National Archives and Record Administration, Canadian resources, Australian resources, New Zealand resources, jiapus and/or zupus.
¿Are there any other suggestions?
¿Does anyone think it is even necessary?
¿Does anyone want to moderate it? If not, I would be willing to moderate the section and help organize it.

Yes, good idea. I think a beginner's page for first time posters. That way, they can read the FAQ, and post there questions. Often the first post from someone gets lost - especially if we have not been here for a few days.

Thank you Helen and Doug,
As pointed out by Helen unless one keeps following the forum on a very regualr basis one can miss out on some interesting and informative discussions. This is because only the 10 latest postings are archived.
Some time back I enquired whether it was possible to increase the number or recent posts from 10 to a larger number like in many other forums, the reply was: Unfortunately Proboard does not see it this way. There is no provision to adjust this setting even with the paid version. One solution is to host it elsewhere. The question is can we take all our postings with us? Anybody?
There are some extremely useful information posted on this forum such as maps, where to stay, how to get there, protocol when visiting, where to look for information, etc. Once it is buried it is very fiddly to look for such information and a FAQ would be very helpful as we cannot archive them easily.
Thank you for your enthusiastic volunteering to host this new section Doug, I hope this will come to fruition.
Joe

Helen, What I propose is not an area for newbies to post. I feel the first two subsections are appropriate areas for questions. However, a few of the requests leave something to be desired. For example, 'Does anyone know my grandfather Wing Wong who was born in China?' Henry is always kind enough to field these questions politely, and he sincerely believes in the adage 'Any question asked is not a stupid question'. What I envision is an area where lurkers (and there are a huge number of lurkers) and those planning to ask questions learn how to acquire some basic information to ask intellegent questions. I participate on this forum not only to help other people, but to learn myself. A good question prompts good answers. An FAQ archetype might include this thread of several posts, including from yourself, on reading gravestones. siyigenealogy.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=names&thread=235&page=1#1566 It was started in 2008 and the topic title: Professional Help? belies the gravestone specific information hidden in the thread. The FAQ would not be limted to links from within the forum. I am hoping that the old timers might write brief How-To blurbs based on their experience. This might include How-To's on how to use Mapbar, and other locations resources. ¿How do other forum members feel about this idea? ¿Is it too restrictive or too open, or even necessary? Joe, I remembered your reply #3 above and I also wish there could be more than 10 recent post. However, I agree that the risk of losing valuable information with a move to a new software engine outweighs the added convenience. Maybe Kevin can work some coding magic? Doug

I must have missed something. At the top of the page next to the star inbetween < home >and < help> is < new topics>. This is a great way of looking at every new posting, not just the ten most recent posts. When there is a lot of activity and writing, depending on only the < ten most recent posts> link in the Forum Statistics section near the bottom left of the home page might miss someone's 11th plus post. The < new topics> link organizes the posts in an easier manner. I am sure it was there all the time. I will update my personal browser bookmark. Thank you Kevin. Doug
