... if I continue to get positives responses, I will start thinking about how I can re-establish my website in a compact, concise, and interesting manner - much of the information needs to be updated. Henry, I also am not a Tan but I enjoyed your old site. I definitely would look forward to your concepts, potential essays, and teachings in a new updated site. Doug

Raymond, Dave, Ah Gin, and Doug,
Thank you all for your very kind words and encouragement - it is much appreciated, especially from colleagues that are knowledgeable about Chinese genealogy.
I believe the real value of a website like "Tom Genealogy" is for the overseas Chinese, who cannot read or write Chinese, and who may be members of the Tan/Tom clan that want to understand Chinese genealogy in general and learn about Tan/Tom genealogy in particular.
If I continue to get such positives responses over the next couple weeks, I will have to re-establish my Tom genealogy website.

Dear Colleagues,
Whilst Henry's website has provided invaluable information, insight and inspiration towards the search of one's Chinese genealogy not only among the Tom/Tam/Tan (譚), but also other Chinese seeking their own genealogy. This applies not only to those well verses only in the English language but also even among those who also know how to read and write Chinese as well. Henry's contribution to Chinese genealogy goes beyond just his website, in fact much more than what he could ever envisage. This is brought about directly or indirectly through his willingness to share his knowledge he had so painstakingly acquired, his knowledge of Chinese geography and above all his willingness to assist and guide others without any expectation of any return beyond just a word of appreciation (which in some cases even this is not forthcoming). Whilst on some genealogical websites available one could quite easily infer of its commercial intention camouflage therein, I can say without any fear of contradiction that this is not the case for Henry's website.
On a personal note, much of what I know of Chinese genealogy and much of the materials I had collected is due greatly through the generosity and assistance of Henry. Above all it is my great fortune to have Henry as my friend.
Thank you very much, Henry.
Philip

Yes your website was great - I have used it before to get information and to look for inspiration for mine. Is there anyway to migrate any of the information?

Hi Helen,
I am now checking into the level of effort and expense required to re-establish my "Tom Genealogy" website.
If you need any of the information from my website - just email me directly and I will provide you with whatever you need.

Dear Henry: I'm one of the Tham/Tan clansmen. I am interested in finding my family roots and would like to help you in hosting your website for free so you can share it with everyone who is interested in their genealogy. >Kai Dear Clansmen and Colleagues, Since I moved from Frederick, Maryland to Goodyear (just west of Phoenix), Arizona on July 4th, 2010, I had to shut down my "Tom Genealogy" website because Verizon, the website sever, does not provide telephone service in the Phoenix area and this was a basic condition to have a website on their server. But, since my website has been offline, I have not received any requests to see the "Tom Genealogy" re-established. Over this next month or so, I will wait to see if I have any requests, if I do not receive very many requests, I will not re-establish the website because of the lack of interest. Henry,
Yes, please take Kai up on his offer and re-establish your Tan website! I am not a Tan either but really appreciated the old site. It was much more than a Tan genealogy and I learned a lot about our common Chinese heritage and history. How you researched your Chinese family lineage when you can neither read nor write Chinese gave me the hope and motivation that I, who knew virtually nothing about my ancestors, would also have a rewarding research experience. Prior to you and this forum, it was a hopeless and frustrating endeavor but thanks to all your help and information, I am thoroughly enjoying the process/progress (and there’s plenty of it)!

Hi Carol & Kai,
Thank you for the kinds words and the encouragement to re-establish my website. So far, the only indications of interest have been from people that have posted on this thread. I will wait and see what develops in terms of interest.
Regards,
Henry

Hi Henry,
Your Tan Clan website is a great contribution to the archival of Chinese genealogy. It provides valuable tools and remarkable perspectives on how to get started with one's family history, local and global. This type of resource could be particularly beneficial to non-Chinese speaking historians and researchers who are at the beginning of the root tracing project. Like others, I was led to this forum from your Tan Clan website. It may be difficult to assess to what extent your wealth of wisdom have impacted us, but judging from the feedback and comments your website is in pretty high demand. I personally would love to see it re-establish, even if you only update it once a year.

Hi Ziqing,
Thank you for your very kind words.
If I keep getting such favorable comments - I will re-establish the website. The website needs to be updated and this will require some effort.
Kevin Lee, the webmaster this SiYi Forum has offered to host my website as part of his overall website - so, Kevin has been very generous.
Regards,
Henry

Henry,
I'd like to add my voice to the chorus urging you to re-establish your website.
From time to time, I trawl the old threads for reading pleasure, there is always something to be had. I used to visit yours from time to time. I remember the old photos showing you as a toddler, and your mother setting sail for the New World as a picture-bride.
I had that pleasure, but there are newer members and visitors missing out on a very interesting piece of family history from an ordinary man. Of course,I think you are anything but ordinary.

Hi Henry,
I have only stumbled upon this forum today and I have read quite a few threads
I gather that public enthusiasm has simmered as your website is still apparently unavailable
I hope there is a way for your work to resurface for younger generations like me to discover and fulfill our lineage curiosities

Dear Lcktam & Douglas,
Currently, I am up to my eyebrow with other projects and family obligations. But, as soon as I can get a break - I will seriously consider re-establishing the "Tom Genealogy" website. It is a major effort because so much of the information needs to be updated.

I myself don't know where to start my search, it's so generous of you to help others like me search for the missing link of their roots. I don't know how to speak or write in Chinese. To start with, I only know that when my father came in the Philippines with his relatives they landed in the Visayas region of our country. This is where he met my mother when he was only in his early 20s. I learned that his father was a very educated man that traveled a lot and unfortunately got sick and wasn't able to return to Amoy. By the way my father's name is Tan, SimBiao and i only know of his mother the late Dona Cosia Uy de Tan. I know that when my father came in the Philippines he was with his brother and sister who likewise had passed away without being able to return to their native land and so with my father. I hope you can help me find my roots. There are lots of Tan in the Philippines and probably they are related in a way but with your help, surely i can find at least some leads to my inquiry. thank you so much.

Hi Gustan - maybe you could start another post - so it does not get lost among all the other threads. Anything about your family can help - photos of headstones, chinese characters, etc. Good luck
