Hi Henry, I joined this forum yesterday and do not have the opportunity to view your website. From the viewers good words and admiration on you and your admirable work, you must be quite knowledgable about the Tan Clan lineage. I am a Tan and is working on my family tree.
My grandfather comes from Shan Yang Village (ɽÑö) in the Fukien Province. His record states that the Shan Yang was in Chiang Chiew Prefecture. However the Shan Yang today in Google Map is now in Xiamen Prefecture. Perhaps you can assist me to locate my ancestral village. I plan to visit Xiamen soon.
I also come across the information that Chen Zheng (êÕþ) is the forefather of the Tan descendents from Chiang Chiew (Zhangzhou) Prefecture [ÕÄ ÖÝ or ȪÖÝ]. Perhaps you can share with me your knowledge about my family lineage. Am I a direct descendent of Chen Zheng?

bhtan, Just like to point out that the topic in this posting is for Tan (譚) surname which is the Mandarin pronunciation for Tham in Hokkien. Your Tan surname is the Hokkien pronunciation for Chen (陳) in Mandarin. These are two entirely different surnames. For more information for other dialect pronunciations for Chen please see: houseofchinn.com/ChenGenealogy.html. For information regarding Chen Zheng (陳政) please goto: houseofchinn.com/History%283%29.html. You will have to find out for yourself if Chen Zheng is your ancestor. Talk to family members to see if you can locate written material to confirm this. twoupman houseofchinn.com

Dear Al Chinn,
You are absolutely correct. My surname is spelt Tan (³Â). May I request the forum moderator to change the title in the forum to the correct surname.
Thank you for responding to my enquiry in the Siyi Forum. Time is of essence as I have already booked a flight to Xiamen this Wednesday 28 February 2013 and I have a special request from you. I have read your website. As you have rightly guided me I would be pursuing the link between Chen Zheng (êÕþ) and his son Yuanguang (Ôª¹â) with my ancestor when I am in Xiamen/Zangzhou. From your side of the link, perhaps you can help me by referring me to the ancestral record of Yuanguang.
When I am in Zhangzhou/Xiamen would like to zoom in on the missing linkage. Where can I find the Ancestral Hall / Tan Clan House / Memorial House of Yuanguang in Zhangzhou/Xiamen? It would be useful if you can send me a map to the location of this austere institution. Alternatively I am sure that in your previous trip to China you access to the ancestral record [maybe zupu (clan register; ×å ×V) or jiapu (family register, ¼Ò ×V)] of Yuanguang. Thank you in anticipation of your kind respond. I shall repeat this email in the Siyi Forum.
My best regards, BHTan

Hi Benny,
Thank you for your email. I have been absent from this Forum for quite sometime as I was quite preoccupied in other areas of Chinese genealogy elsewhere and also in my professional duties. As arranged over the hand-phone just now, I look forward to meet up with you at my house tomorrow. I have also emailed my contact in Xiamen who might be able to help in locating your ancestral hall in ŽR‹Â.
Next Sunday I will also be meeting up with a student studying in Hong Kong and doing his final year project on Chinese genealogy. He would be flying in to KL for his cousin's wedding then. He contacted me through the message board in Geni.com
Philip

Hi Henry, My name is 譚國杰 from New York City. I just found this forum via Google about the Tan (譚) Clan Surname during these last couple weeks and I've been reading about this book that you've published back in 2009 in regards to the Tan (譚) Clan ancestry and progenitors. Backstory:My paternal grandfather and his father were from the Jinkengcun (筋坑村), Taishan, Guangdong Province, and it seems the Jinkengcun village my paternal grandfather was from recorded my family's ancestry going back about 8 generations. And I was wondering if you had any information in regards to the Tan (譚) Clan from the Taishan, Guangdong Province area that I could use to extend my family tree with? My paternal grandfather, TAN WO RONG (譚沃榮), was someone who was well known in the Taishan, Guangdong Province, because he held some high ranking position within the government or something and was very well respected, and I heard from my paternal aunts that he was in charge of providing Taishan with electricity. As for my paternal great grandfather, TAN SONG FA (譚松发) / TAN YI YI (譚裔益), I heard that he was a weapons importer or something during the Chinese Civil War and was traveling to and from Montreal, Canada to China, and had some restaurant business in Montreal, Canada. Here's the list of names of my paternal ancestors:6th Great Grandfather - TAN YAN QIAN (譚延仟) 5th Great Grandfather - TAN SI HAN (譚嗣漢) 4th Great Grandfather - TAN SI JIE (譚思捷) 3rd Great Grandfather - TAN KAI LONG (譚開龍) 2nd Great Grandfather - TAN WEN JI (譚文楫) 1st Great Grandfather - TAN SONG FA (譚鬆發) / TAN YI YI (譚裔益) Paternal Grandfather - TAN WO RONG (譚沃榮) Here's a Google Photos link if photos attached to this post are no longer accessible: photos.app.goo.gl/v4LxfN5biZLBcEQR7

andytan, It isn't usual for Henry not to reply. He just got back from leading a 3 week genealogy tour in China and may be jet lagged. Also you're responding to an old thread. Consider private messaging him via the Forum or search his threads for his email address. There was no one in the United States more knowledgeable about the Tan clan then Henry

andytan,
Doug is absolutely right. Henry is the expert in regards to the Tan clan in the siyi region. It is best to get a full response from him. But, in the meantime, I will let you know some of what you will expect to hear. You are a descendant of Tan Hen Lin, who is the progenitor of the Tan clan in the White Water (Bak Sui) area of Toisan. It looks like there are about 12 generations missing between you and Tan Hen Lin. With the names you provided Henry should be able to locate them in the Toisan Tan Zupu (clan book) and connect TAN YAN QIAN (譚延仟) to Tan Hen Lin. He then has the lineage from Tan Hen Lin all the way up to the Yellow Emperor. Get ready to add to your tree big time.
- Jeremy

Hey Doug 周 and Jeremy Chin, Thank you for taking the time to write to me. I would like to mention that I'm actually not sure if my 6th Great Grandfather is named TAN YAN QIAN (譚延仟) or not because I can't read Chinese and I used Google Translate to translate the Chinese characters next to the name of my 4th Great Grandfather (十五世祖), but I will be getting my family's genealogy book from my paternal cousins this upcoming Monday, December 23, 2019, so I might be able to provide more information then. Lastly, I would like to ask if there are any "Tan Genealogy: Heritage and Lineage" books that are still available for purchase and if there's a PDF version of the book? Additional Information:
1st Great Paternal Grandfather - TAN SONG FA (譚松发) / TAN YI YI (譚裔益) died on May 5, 1935 and is buried in the Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal, Canada. 1st Great Paternal Grandmother - CHEN KUN FANG (陈坤芳) was married to TAN SONG FA (譚松发) / TAN YI YI (譚裔益). (I don't know where my 1st Great Paternal Grandmother was born, but I know she lived in Jinkengcun (筋坑村), Taishan, Guangdong Province from 1920 onward.) If anyone has information that I could connect to my 1st Great Grandmother, that would be great. Here's a Google Photos link if photos attached to the only known photos of my paternal grandfather the photos attached are no longer accessible: photos.app.goo.gl/EzdsWiMdoKZj2gjC7Best Regards, Andy Tan

Andytan, The book is only available directly from Henry, so contact him at tomclan@gmail . He reprinted the book about 2 years ago. Henry took about 50 people on a genealogy workshop-tour in China recently and I imagine he is still busy trying to catch up. I am also a Tan (Tham) and just returned last month from my genealogy hunt for my village in Kaiping but unfortunately, the three Tan villages I visited were the wrong villages. There are 15 more Tan villages in that same area, so I’m hoping to narrow down the correct village via help from a cousin in California. I had great success with finding my Chan, Tang and Lao ancestral villages. Ian

Andy, philiptancl is also a Tan and has an extensive Geni.com site. Personal message him via the Forum to share information. He is also the most experienced English-speaking Chinese genealogy document expert on the other side of the International Date Line. Please email me. My contact is in my profile, or you can personal message me via the Forum.

Dear Friends, I apologize for my late reply. Yes, our 3 week China Workshop with 48 ABC seniors was quite a success and we returned just before Thanksgiving. Then the jet lag and a bad cold, probably caught a bug from breathing the same air as 400 other passengers during on our 16 hour flight back from China. Then about 2 weeks ago, I had some prostrate surgery and had a rather rough recovery. I'm at about 90 % recovered, but, this final 10 % is slow going - I guess when one is 77 years old, one does not bounce back as fast. While I may not be the most knowledgeable person about the Tan clan, I do have some material to share & very happy to help anybody with researching their Tan / Tom / Thom / Tham / Tam, Thom, Hom / Hum ancestry. Please send me an email [ Tomclan@Gmail.com ] - I do have copies of my book available. I am also running a 3 day Chinese American Genealogy Workshop in Las Vegas [ January 27-30, 2020 ], which you can still register for - here is the DropBox link: [ www.dropbox.com/sh/c0g1czt6gycsxrw/AAAaLB_11WnweFv2d4fWn5SBa?dl=0 ] for information. Yes, I will also be running the China Workshop again in November 2020. For my dear friend Doug, I wanted to let you know that yes, while our dear friend Philip Tan has "Tan" as his surname, this is not the same as my surname. For Philip, "Tan" is the Hokkien / Minnan romanization for the Chen [ 陳 ]clan. And, Philip is quite a Chen clan expert. For myself, "Tan" is the Pinyin romanization for my surname [ 譚 ]. Doug, this was one of the first things I learned about my surname :-) Happy Holidays to all of you, Henry
