Geoff, As I said I had no choice in the matter. Grandfather had retired and too old to sponsor me. There was an attempt to have me enter Canada on false pretence in the late 50s. It got knocked on the head. Going to Cuba was also out of the question because Fidel Castro spoilt the party for everyone.
Grandfather's sister married a man from a neighbouring village, and he worked for one of the banana merchants at Haymarket, Sydney early last century. One of my uncles came in the early 50s. So, Australia stuck with me.
Back when I was little, young fellas with overseas connections were expected to go abroad and seek a better future. There was no one for me to turn to in HK.
