www3.sympatico.ca/toronto.hakka - The Hakka community in Toronto and Canada has come of age. Whether derived from the Caribbean Basin, Hong Kong, India, Mauritius or other regions, most of the Hakkas over the last three decades have gained the necessities of life and are prepared to participate fully in Canadian society. The Hakkas in Toronto and in other cities of Canada are on the threshold of a new stage of cultural development. The elders desire now more than ever to pass the heritage and culture to the next generation, most of whom no longer speak the Hakka language but who now have vast opportunity to visit ancestral villages in China, to build family trees and to network with other Hakka communities through tourism or the internet. Young and old are called to study how the culture has spread through migrations beginning around 317 A.D. and envision how it will take root in the soil of Canada.
