I've been searching for my great-great grandpa since I was little but little to know about except from hearsay information. However, I think I may have found him but I'm not sure because I keep questioning everything but everything seems to fall into place. Does is seem plausible I found my great great father?:
- My great aunt (my great grandpa's half sister) is that she remembers going to my great grandpa's funeral and later the cemetary at, the Woodland Cemetary in London, Ontario, Canada. Communication with her is difficult because she is deaf and we've had little contact with her sister who isn't deaf but may have more information. She said her grandpa died in the 1950s when she was around 10-12 years old.
- My grandpa told me the information he had on his great great grandpa was through his mother, who used to receive the occassional letter from his great great grandfather. My great great grandpa's name was pronouned Liu Hey Sum.
- My grandpa said his grandfather set the Chinese text/print for the a Chinese Free Masons newspaper in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Coincedentally I found information on website about a newspaper that ended in 1956 and happened to be part of the Chinese Free masons. My grandpa died in the 1950s and so did the newspaper end too.
"Hung Chung Shih Pao = The Chinese Times
Chinese-language newspaper that began publication in 1928 and ceased in 1956. Started as a weekly newspaper, but became a daily about 1929. An organ newspaper of the Chinese Freemasons."
- I contacted the Woodland Cemetary about any information about my great great grandfather. My great grandpa is also buried at the same cemetary, although his records aren't listed on any Ontario cemetary registries but was able to confirm his records.
The General Manager at the cemetary told me they couldn't find any information on a "Liu/Lau Hey Sum" but did find a "Lew Sam" who died in July 1955 at age 74. I asked my grandpa if my great great grandpa went by an English name but wasn't sure because he didn't know him. I also asked my great aunt but didn't remember either. I think he would have gone by an English name because he grew up in Canada with his father, a gold store owner.
I found it very coincental that the Sam Lew died in 1955, around the same time the newspaper ened in 1956. I think Lew Sam might be the same person as my great great grandpa or maybe I'm just making a lot of assumptions.
