Has anyone had any dealings with these people. One of my in laws is from Toisan, and he has a few relatives from Toisan who can communicate with the spirits. One of them is only 16, and she had this ability to communicate. She is protected by Kwan Yin, and can call on many others to help. This girl is not an actress - her manner becomes one of an educated woman, very well spoken. The spirits take over her body and she can help people.
Has anyone else had this experience or knows of anyone who has had success with a medium?

Helen,
In my younger days, in the jungle of Malaya, back in the 50s, 60s, my mother used to take me along to attend "medium sessions". These mediums were know to the town folks (of their skills) and they were consulted by the townfolks. I recall the mediums were consulted on may things: fortune telling or looking forward when there are decisions to be made. I know not the succcess rate of such persons. That said, what I don't understand, I do not dismiss out of hand. The medium could indeed have special skills endowed on him/her.
Regarding Kwan Yin, she remains my patron godess, as I was "given" to her when I was an infant.
Regards, Ah Gin

Thanks Ah Yin - Having been "given" to her, do you have to do anything special in honour of her? I heard a bit more at Yum Char today. When the medium needs to summons one, she "flicks a pebble," and the "heaven open" as that is where the Kwan Yin lives. There are many of them, and each one has her own skills. Yesterday the family asked how the early deceased generations were doing? The medium asked where were they buried. Having found out, she said - I'll go and see how they are. Within a few seconds she came back and reported that the family were fine.
A few minutes later, the medium said - your family have come to see you - they're outside. You have better go out and greet them.

Helen,
In my tiny home, I have a number of places of honour for Kwan Yin: front door garden, lounge, home office. I need to do more, I think.
My experience was that the medium went into a trance, almost at will, but usually following chanting and calling on the relevant sprit to help in the process. We did not use the medium to cross over to the dearly departed, but rather, seeked to consult the gods or other lessor dieties.
I am sure that the whole question of Medium, paranormal contacts spins an entire different Message Board.
Regards, Ah Gin

Interesting discussion. I am interested in the metaphysics, but my command of Chinese is not good enough to read up on the subject in classic Chinese.
As a wee small lad in China, I went to a few seance sessions out of curiosity. I was too young to know the details. I remember people packed the houses. The medium then as now is always a woman. This is normally on the seventh or is it the forty-ninth day ( I stand to be corrected) after the person departed this world. In the seance, the medium summons the spirit of the departed; she takes on the demeanor and mannerism of the person. The next of kin usually asks about unfinished business or if the spirit was well provided for in the nether world eg. offerings burnt for him or her at the funeral.
When my mother passed away three years ago, my folks in China went to a more distant village to consult a medium. This is to avoid having someone who might know our circumstances and concoct a story to suit. I didn't make a big deal of it, but my cousin's wife was convinced my mother was at peace.
Now, this is something. My wife's cousin's mother-in-law in Hoiping was a medium. She never set foot outside of China, my mother-in-law met her there. Yet she could give a fair description of our flat and surrounding area where we live and said it is a good place to stay. She was also able to describe the temperament of my young child, then. We made up a long list of questions in our mind to ask her on our next trip to Hoiping, but unfortunately, she died untimely.
There are things science simply cannot explain. The spirit medium is one of them.
