The book "Bridging the Pacific:San Francisoc Chinatown and Its People is a highly recommended classic and on the first generation. Written by Thomas W. Chinn. San Francisco:Chinese Historical Society, 1989.
There are interviews with the business owners, ministers, about some of the ABC organizations as well as traditional chinese organizations in SF Chinatown. Maps of 1884-5 SF Chinatown. Chinese Business Directories 1876, 1931, 1988. Chart of Village Clan Associations, and a great index of individuals interviewed.
