tinyurl.com/4jx5jwt On 8 February 2011 the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) issued a rare “special alert”, warning that an extreme drought threatened the wheat harvest in China, the world’s largest wheat grower. The FAO said that the drought affected more than a third of China’s 14 million ha of wheat and left 2.57 million people and 2.79 million livestock short of water.
