I am seeking anyone with knowledge of my grandfathers family. Alec Chan (aka Guay Gun Chan) lived 1901 - 1990. He was the son of Chen Ru Jin and Liu Sen Huan. He was from Hargee Village near Canton. Alec Chan lived in Auckland, New Zealand. He arrived in NZ in 1920, spent time in Dannevirke with his paternal uncle before moving to Auckland. The paternal uncles name was Chan Shing Lee (aka Chan Min Fun) (aka Chan Shing Goou) he lived 1866-1936. As this was my grandfathers uncle does anyone know the ancestors that link Chan Shing Lee to my grandfathers parents Ru Jin Chen and Huan Sen Liu. (There is some confusion about the surname, as our family are called Chan, but a letter from Jie Hai Chen one of grandfathers brothers had our name as Chen?) We have lost contact with our family in China and would like to find this history before it is lost to us.

Maggie, There are many Chans/Chens who originated from Hargee of Jung Seng, in Mandarin Xiaji of Zengcheng, which is now part of Guangzhou (Canton) in Guangdong province, and who immigrated to NZ. Helen, who frequently posts on this board and has relatives from there, has already done quite a bit of research. I think she's currently away traveling. She can help you when she returns. In the meantime, if you do a Google search on "Hargee" at the bottom of this page and select siyigenealogy.proboards.com instead of web, you'll find all previous posts related to Hargee. This link also has some info on Chan family from Hargee, chinesecommunity.org.nz/site/topics/show/105-the-first-chinese-refugees

Thanks for the directions. I'll follow your ideas up as it would be lovely to see where my grandfather came from, and maybe find some useful information to help me find our family. I have a list of my grandfathers siblings, but as I wasn't raised with the language I have no idea if they are male or female names. Again thank you for your help.

Maggie - I met your Grandfather's family a year or so ago in Hargee. I was in contact with Noelene a while back, but didn't get back to her. You can contact me via personal message. Your Grandfather still has a relative in Auckland, age mid 90s.
The Chan name is Cantonese - Chen is Mandarin. His surname was Chan.
I've just come back from China, and visted a Wong village nearby.
