Fay Chee,
I am too lazy to explore the zupu's in Google Books. Do you think it is as well organized as Family Search's collection of zupu's

Hi Doug,
I haven't been able to find the Zupu's on Family Search so I can't compare them with the Books on Google. Unless you can read Chinese, the Google Zupu's are useless (for me). I posted the pictures of the Google Books in case anyone wanted me to download them with a link so that they could use them for research.

According to Woodson, the Chinese Genealogy site, Roots Wiki as well as the temporary Village database, will be dark and not returning. These sites are served by the www.legacy1.net address.

Hi Doug, Thanks for letting us know. I'm sorry to hear that these sites will not be returning. Like the Village Database, they have been invaluable tools in Siyi Chinese genealogical research. Did Woodson give a reason why they won't be returning? Best regards, LJeung

There are multitude of reasons.
There was not that much activity. Another Chinese genealogist mentioned that as the exclusionary period generation moves on, there is less demand to help people study their genealogy. We have seen that on the Chinese Roots Wiki.
Woodson indicated also that he is moving on also and himself spending less time on the site.
The Friends of Roots Village Database has supplanted Woodson's temporary Roots Wiki Database, which was always meant to be a stopgap measure until the original Village Database could be revived. The Friends of Roots and the Chinese Historical Society of America have stepped up and filled that role.

One thing about the Roots Wiki Database is that when we locate or verify a village, we put in the correct coordinates. Now we can't do that.

lachinatown,
You did most of the work updating villages coordinates. Inquiries to make the Friends of Roots Village Database into a ‘living’ database by allowing users to add information contemporaneously, have not been answered. I almost got a commitment from the group; unfortunately, it was to no avail.
Hopefully the information you entered into the Chinese Roots Wiki Village Database was also saved onto the Excel Database I shared.
Internet sites can be so ephemeral.

Hi Doug, By "not that much activity", do you mean that there were not that many contributions and visits at the site? Is the exclusionary period generation the generation of Canadian and U.S. citizens and residents of Chinese ancestry born during the period that the Chinese Exclusion Acts were in force? If so, then I myself am from the post-exclusionary period generation. Isn't the demand for help on studying genealogy at the Chinese Genealogy site directed to this forum? Since the Friends of Roots and the CHSA have stepped up and filled the role of Woodson's temporary Roots Wiki Database by reviving the original Village DB, perhaps we can convince them to do the same for Woodson's site. We may be able to do this at the upcoming Chinese Genealogy Workshop, by talking in person to Al Cheng, co–founder, group leader, advisor to Friends of Roots, and Sue Lee, executive director of the CHSA. Also, I think having the site run by an organization makes it more sustainable. Best regards, LJeung

Hi Doug, Perhaps, at the Chinese Genealogy Workshop, we can make the inquiries in person with Al Cheng. However, since the Village Database is a digitization of information from a historical document, the Index of Clan Names By Villages, I prefer to request the creation of a second, extensible database based on the first, to serve as your proposed "living" database. Best regards, LJeung
