Hi lachinatown, That is a very unfortunate loss of valuable genealogical information. LJeung

Okay, will do, Doug.
By the way, am I correct about what you mean by the exclusionary period generation?

You are correct about what my networked Chinese Genealogist friend defined as the exclusionary period generation.
The 'not much activity' was the term used by Woodson.

Hi Doug, Thanks for confirming the definition of the term "exclusionary period generation". I think the term should be plural, though, as some families might still have two generations born during the exclusionary period. Although I am of the post-exclusionary period generations, I do ask for help on studying my genealogy (and I also help others on their genealogies). So, there is at least a demand of one. Best regards, LJeung

Thanks, lachinatown. It seems to be a color-coded version of the map of the villages listed in the Chinese Culture Center (CCC)’s In Search of Roots Village Database website. The site's About the Roots Village Database page says this other database is a new "database of various villages in Guangdong Province, China, that are the ancestral homes of interns from Chinese Culture Center’s In Search of Roots program in San Francisco, California, USA. Additionally, the database includes many village listings recorded in a 1950’s census of the same province." This is essentially a second, extensible village database that can serve as your proposed "living" database, although it doesn't seem to be based on the first, original Village Database now sponsored by Friends of Roots and the CHSA. Perhaps, each database should provide a link to the other. I can ask Al Cheng and the CCC to do this, instead of asking Al to create an extension. Best regards, LJeung

Hi lachinatown, I just took the In Search of Roots Survey. I made the following comment: "I see a supplementary relationship between the In Search of Roots Village Database, which is a new database of the ancestral villages of interns from Chinese Culture Center’s In Search of Roots program as well as many villages recorded in a 1950’s census, and the Village Database (http://villagedb.friendsofroots.org/search.cgi), based on the "Index of Clan Names By Villages" published by the American Consulate General in Hong Kong in the 1973 and now reestablished by the Friends of Roots (http://villagedb.friendsofroots.org/search.cgi) and Chinese Historical Society of America (http://chsa.org/). I recommend that each of the two databases should acknowledge the existence of other, state that it supplements the other, and provide a link to the other." I'll still ask Al and any In Search of Roots representatives at the Chinese Genealogy Workshop. Best regards, LJeung

LJeung, actually the map doesn't really help that much. Best thing is to have a spreadsheet listing the villages in Chinese, pinyin, Cantonese, etc., coordinates, other information, like city, townships, etc. This way, we can do a search easily.

Hi lachinatown,
I agree with you. Also, I think only In Search of Roots interns can add villages to the In Search of Roots Village Database.
