I'm currently tracing the Châu branch of my wives ancestors. Can someone help me translate this gravestone? I can't read Chinese characters. This is a grave in Vietnam, so the latin transcription is Vietnamese. This should be the grave of Châu Hòa. I understand that the Chinese character for Châu is 周 (Zhou). His wife is Trương Hải Đường. Trương in Chinese characters should be 張 (Zhang). What other information is on this stone? Any dates / place of origins? I know the 張 family lived in Vietnam for 2 more generation before mrs. Trương Hải Đường already, but mr. Châu Hòa is said to be born in China, although I don't know the 周 place of origin in China... Attachments:

...although I don't know the 周 place of origin in China... Zhou 周 is the 12th most common name in China. "By some estimates, 100 surnames cover 85 percent of China’s citizens...By contrast, 70,000 surnames cover 90 percent of Americans." Name Not on Our List? Change It, China Says - NYTimes.comclickWhat I think you are asking is the place of origin of the diaspora of Chinese heading to Vietnam during a certain time period. I hear Fujian is a common starting point, but other members of the Forum will need to confirm.

Hello Carbaca, Thanks for the transcription. I hope anyone can translate it for me as well... Hello Doug, you are absolutely right. I'm mostly interested in the place of origin, but also in names and dates. According to family stories the Chau family came from Guangdong, but from the most northern part of it, which is indeed close to Fuijan. I cannot read the characters as transcribed by Carbaca, but this seems to me like a location, correct???: 潮邑姨鄉河尾社 When I past this in google maps, it shows no result, but only the first character 潮 results in Chauzhou, which is here: maps.google.com/maps?q=Chaozhou,+Guangdong,+China&hl=en&ie=UTF8&sll=23.648298,116.71669&sspn=0.212282,0.363579&oq=%E6%BD%AE&doflg=ptk&hnear=Chaozhou,+Guangdong,+China&t=m&z=12&iwloc=A That would make sense, because his wives grandfather came from Guraozhen, which is less than 100 km away in the Shantou county... Can someone confirm this is correct??? Thanks a lot! Frank.

Chao County Yi Xiang (District) Hewei She Grandfather Zhou He Granmother Zhang Haitang 1974 , first month 6th day
Chao County, Yishan Pu, Hewei She Grandfather Zhou QinBin Grandmother Qiu Yulan 1994
Born 1929 at Baclieu Father Zhou Qinying Died 2003 August 4th Kueiwei year 7th month 7th day (lunar calendar) age 75, tomb erected by wife and son
The area Chaozhou county is now Shantou and Shanwei cities. Yi or Yishan are former district names, they may not exist any more. In Chaozhou region or in the Chaozhou dialect, my guess is She is/was a village. There is a Hewei village in Shantou. Using Google Maps, search for "Guangdong, Shantou, Chaoyang, 河尾".

23.3078, 116.39564 coordinates is the most likely location for first headstone of 河尾 or Hewei. (zoom to 2000 ft level to view the name)

Hello laohuaqiao and lachinatown,
Thanks a lot. That makes perfect sense! The grandfather of the wife in the first grave (mrs. Zhang Haitang) came from Guraozhen or a nearby village, which is just 10 km north of Hewei and her daughter married a man whose father came from Qingyang, which is just 10 km west of Hewei... Thanks a lot. That's a great starting point for a local search!
