I was so surprised today when our young cousin, living in Hong Kong, descendant from Ping Ling Village sent me (and my Sis) a Valentine note! She explained that today is the Western celebration and the Chinese traditional Valentine's day, which only happens on the same day every 19 years. I then had to look this up and found via wiki:In Chinese, Valentine's Day is called lovers' festival (simplified Chinese: 情人节; traditional Chinese: 情人節; pinyin: qíng rén jié). The so-called "Chinese Valentine's Day" is the Qixi Festival, celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar. It commemorates a day on which a legendary cowherder and weaving maid are allowed to be together. Valentine's Day on February 14 is not celebrated because it is often too close to the Chinese New Year, which usually falls on either January or February.[citation needed] In Chinese culture, there is an older observance related to lovers, called "The Night of Sevens" (Chinese: 七夕; pinyin: Qi Xi). According to the legend, the Cowherd star and the Weaver Maid star are normally separated by the Milky Way (silvery river) but are allowed to meet by crossing it on the 7th day of the 7th month of the Chinese calendar.
Previously, on the 6th of Feb, I had recieved a "Happy Birthday", celebrating the birth of everyone. Young Mandy, man yee sin, is 18 years old, and is explaining the culture and traditions of our family in Hong Kong and Ping Ling.
She called us on New Years and I asked what they were doing for the celebration. The men had gone to Ping Ling and she and her mom went to temple, ate good "foods", went to a movie and later young Mandy went to snack and meet friends at McDonalds.
Although I am writing in less, I read and learn from the posts and am connecting to my new family. So much to learn. Thank you for the thread lessons
