Dear Colleagues,
Douglas Lam asked me to post this report from him:
" Fay Chee, never say never. Please give yourself a chance to see China for the first time. Mars it isn't, but China would be so different to the U.S.of A. which is your home. If a long flight is too stressful, try breaking up the journey in sectors.
On Monday evening after visiting Duanfen, we got back to Taicheng too late for the last bus for Chungshan. We checked into another 120 RMB / night hotel near the bus terminus. At about 6 PM, I called Henry's nephew Shi Cheng to invite him to join us to dinner. He couldn't make it but he did refer us to his friend's eatery to try frog rice. Last time it was eel rice.
Shi Cheng did join us for a chat later. You were never far in our conversation. Shi Cheng said you can go direct from Canton Airport to Taicheng by bus. He can meet you there. Else, he can arrange a passenger van to pick up you and your party instead of public transport. If the timing is right, I'd like to join Shi Cheng in Canton to welcome you, and escort you every step of the way to Chao Yang. If you're adventurous, you can take the Metro to the bus terminus, see China up close, and then take a bus to Taicheng.
lolly, I think Suzie did feel a little guilty for not replying to your letter. She kept on saying joining a group tour to Australia one day. She certain has the means to do so. I asked her if there was anything I could take back home for you. She said something about some local foodstuff. I knocked it on the head because of quarantine regulations. I'll call her again on the phone.
I plan to see Carlos' extended family on Sunday, and invite them to lunch. The lunch meeting couldn't take place last weekend because Maggie my contact had to attend a parents' meeting at Macau. The new date puts my plan to travel further afield on halt. I planned a meeting with Maggie and her family members for a long time in anticipation of Carlos joining me from Peru. Now, Carlos is coming to Melbourne to study for a higher degree instead.
Life is full of little twists and turns, sometimes for the better."
Regards,
Henry Tom

Thanks Fay Chee! I wish I had a large piece of glass or plexiglass to place over the document to smooth it out better. Otherwise, I'm very happy with how well the Chinese characters and artwork turned out.

Hi All,
I also have a similar wedding certificate in red. It is dated 1909, and Luckily, it was folded and in the RG85 case file for my husband's grandfather. he was a true Native Son returning to San Francisco after his wedding in ceremony with his new bride. requested the case file while researching at NARA.SF. I almost jumped when a staffer said it was a rare wedding certificate. it was the maternal listing for 3 generations of her family with men's full names and the women identified only by surname. the genealogy listing go towards proving that this couple were not cousins. we'd also photographed the entire document, then each section that were translated.
in examining the wedding document and chinese calligraphy training, I could tell that a major portion is written by one calligrapher with space to allow for personal information. another calligrapher filled the pertinent information for the couple. (A practice I think was utentized before copying machines). I think he turned in his wedding certificate as part of his proof to re-enter the U.S. During the Chinese Exclusion Era and discovered 90 years later in the RG85 case file.

Jeanie, lachinatown and I have no prior knowledge of the existence of these certificates. Are these wedding certificates used in the ceremony in China? Was this an attestation from the matchmaker that the couple had no close relationship? Or, were these made to be used solely as a document of marriage for the USA immigration official? Is there a Chinese name for these documents? kjhong had imaged the front of his document. Maybe lachinatown can transcribe/translate the cover? Jeanie, can you post an image of your document?

Another possibility: Could these marriage documents be a used in the custom of the dowry?

Hi Doug et al,
The red envelope has these characters : 五世其昌. (Translation needed.. My rough translation: A Five Generation ... ) Please excuse my scanned photograph. The original wedding certificate dated 1909 (RG85 #10365-5632 Lo Tuck) resides at NARA.SF. and these photos were taken in days of dinosaurs... Pre-wide use of digital cameras. These were wedding certificates used in China. Reads from your right hand down the column and continues left to the top of that column. I've coded the sheets with LO1 - LO6. Page LO1a is a close up of the envelope showing 五世其昌. Page LO2 lists the name of family representatives and document date. Page LO5 is a dowry list. Page LO3 (middle photo - are 3 generations of Ms. Ow Yang's family. Page LO6 is a brief translation of the certificate.
I'm having some problems uploading my scans. I'll try again later.

Wedding Certificate (WC) LO3A. This is the beginning of the wedding certificate WC.LO3B. This section lists the bride's 3 generations. It begins with her greatgrandfather's full name, ggmother's surname only; it continues with her grandfather's full name, gmother's surname only, lastly, her father's full name, mother's full name. Following tradition and genetic concerns, the listing of several generations is to provide proof that the newly weds are not cousins. Sorry, for the inconvenience with the images in my posts.l Jeanie
