Hi, I am hoping someone can point me in a direction. I found on ancestry.com that my 2x great-grandfather came from China in 1872 at the age of 6. Both his parents were born in China. His name is listed as William Gencen or William I. Gencen. I am assuming that is not his given name, any suggestions on where to begin finding more about him? Any help is appreciated, as so little is known about that side of the family.

Hi there,
Were you ever able to find additional information about William Gencen? He is also my two times great grandfather on my mother's side. My grandfather mentions his grandpa (William) in his journal but doesn't say anything about him being Chinese. I suspect that maybe he didn't know. I can confirm that he was at least of partial Chinese decent as my mom's 23 and Me genetic test showed 17% East Asian/Chinese DNA.
Any info you can provide would be much appreciated.
Thank you!

Hi: Some additional detective work is necessary before the mystery of your great-great-grandfather can be solved. Look for any other clues you can find, especially anything written in Chinese. Family records or letters would be helpful. You could even check the local newspapers to see if there is anything about your family. If you have not already done so, find the burial place and check to see what is written on the headstone. If you can find more clues, they may lead you back to your family's Chinese roots.

Don't know if you have this information already, seems that your great grandfather's birth was in February 1866 as per US Census 1900, and migrated to the US in 1880 (not 1872, tho.. image above is from myfamilysearch.org If you have your g-grandfather's parents name perhaps you can search for them on that site or in the Ellis Island records for the immigration entry But as Greg and others before me, try getting the Chinese characters of your g-grandpa and their parents, it will help you tremendously in your investigation! Best of luck on your search! Edit: Another record for him on that page Name William I. Gencen Event Date 16 Feb 1938 Event Place Ormand, Volusia, Florida Gender Male Age (Original) 79y 10m 10d Birth Date 06 Apr 1858 Birthplace San Franscio, Calif. Danny, if you have a family tree online, perhaps you can ask your sister to upload the results from her DNA test to it, most of them offer to match you with family?
