Hello Im no sure how far this will get me but I guess it never hurts to try. My grangran was born in China which we believe is now Shenzhen, Yantian (could be a different area). His name was either spelled shui,Sui,shuey that would have been his first name his surname was Cheng he spoke Cantonese. Shui Cheng came to the west coast to work on merchant ships as cook and to build railroads under very harsh circumstances. Some how he escaped that life and ended up in Philadelphia, In Philadelphia he meet my grandmother who was a mixed race women. This was a very unique couple my grandmother stood at 4"11 a African American women with red hair and my grandfather a somewhat taller Chinese man. The story goes my grandfather had children a daughter in China that made it or didn't make it to the u.s. During the decade my grandfather lived the family was pretty close he had brothers and uncles come from China and everybody knew each other somehow we all broke apart and I've only been able to locate one of my grandfathers brothers children and he's been looking for the rest of the family. My grandfather Owened 2 Chinese stores with my grandmother the last one was in north Philadelphia. If this story sounds similar to you or you heard maybe someone in your family speak of something like this story please feel free to contact me.

Dear Ginacheng,
You have a very colorful heritage.
Do you or your granduncle's children have any Chinese or official documents that would help to provide the Chinese names of your grandfather & his brothers, the name of their ancestral village in China. Sometimes, men would add their Chinese name.
These Chinese characters can show up in the ship's passenger list of the ship he came to America, birth certificates of children were born in the US. If your grandfather was buried in the US, by any of his brothers - there might be the Chinese characters on his gravestone that provide his name, dates of birth & death, name of the ancestral village, county & province in China. Once you have the name of your grandfather and the ancestral village and the collateral information of his brother's names - you have a very good chance of recovering your family lineage from the village genealogy book that would contain the names of your grandfather & his brothers.
If you know the type of business and about when your grandfather owned them - they are probably listed in the city business directories - you then might be able to find incorporation papers. In years ending in 5 - many cities has city censuses and for years ending in zero - there were Federal decennial censuses that can provide additional information.
