We have a small hand written note in the family which belonged to my grandmother. It sets out her names (English and Chinese), time, date and place of birth, name of her father and the village he is from, name of her mother. We believe it was written by her father. Ellen didn't learn to write Chinese. My question to the forum is was this sort of document common?

Certainly an excellent way of pass on the information to future generation. Very thoughtful.

Further request for help - my father can make sense of most of this but the fourth column doesn't make sense. So far we have, column from the right: 1 - Calendar year by emperor; phonetic approximation of "Cumberland" 2 - month, day, time of day, daughter's given name 3 - Western date 4 - [?] 5 - Father's name and village where he was born 6 - Mother's name
