Hi, I'm searching my grandmother-in-law's village and having a few problems. Her village, Dunmu Li, is located in Tanxixiang district, in Kaiping. I tried unsuccessfully to change the traditional "mu" in Dunmu to the simplied character, in order to facilitate the search location in Sogou or Google map. Any help would be much appreciated. Her family name is Poon, or Pan, 潘. Also, when a village location is found on map, how does done find its coordinates? Thanks, Ming

Hi Ming, Here's the characters in traditional and simplified. 廣東開平潭溪鄉敦睦里 广东开平潭溪乡敦睦里 Does the "Mu" in question have a simplified version? Maybe there are two names for the village: villagedb.friendsofroots.org/display.cgi?level=Village&id=4765Interesting that the name is Tse instead of Poon on the site. Good luck! Matthew

Hi Matthew, Thank you for taking the time to help me with my problem. My grandmother-in-law married into the Der clan (谢) and with the Chinese tradition, this became her "village". I did look thru the villagedb.friendsofroots site, but, didn't dawn on me to check out the Der clan for this village. The other problem I ran into was the character (睦, Mu, or Muk), I've found it on Pleco, but, unable to find the character on MDBG website. Consequently, wasn't able to use the Chinese characters in searching for the location on Sogou or Google map. Even with the new information, using 敦睦里, or 堆木村, I was not able to locate the village in Kaiping county. Maybe this site no longer exists. I know it's not far from 朝陽里 (Chiu Yeung Lay). I found 潭溪村, but, didn't think this is the same market area as 潭溪. You are correct, "mu" appears not to have a simplified version. Can you or someone be able to provide an explanation? Thank you, Ming

The only simplified characters are as shown on Matthew's post. The village 敦睦里 is correct. It is located just north west [corrected my mistake] above 潭溪 and the park, Tangkou Liyuan Park. Approx. coordinates 22.352228, 112.563417. Google map is not good in providing labels for small villages, not sure of the limits of the village.
BTW: Usually when you find the 潭溪村 (Cun), then you know the 潭溪鄉 (Xiang or Heung), since most likely they are derived from each other. Something like New York City is in New York state or Los Angeles city is in Los Angeles County. And most likely the administrative office for your village is located there.
Also why you said 朝陽里 not far from 敦睦里?

Hi lachinatown, Thank you for the insight on the 潭溪村 (Cun) and 潭溪鄉 (Xiang or Heung), which leads to another question. Let say I'm looking for 潭溪村, in Kaiping county, as an example, and in the same county, I came up with 潭溪里. I know the the number of households in 里 is much smaller than 村, can I safely assumed that we're looking a 2 different villages? My father-in-law mentioned he walk to 敦睦里 from 朝陽里, so I thought it close by. From the coordinates you provided, it looks like it may take 2 hours on foot. Thanks again.

dragon008, To me 里 and 村 are basically the same. Lot of maps do not even bother them words/characters. So 潭溪村 may just be labeled as 潭溪. Yes, it was strange to see you say that 朝陽 Chaoyang is close by. Hope someone has an explanation to it. Keep this in mind, 敦睦里 is a unique name, but 朝陽 Chaoyang is common. The 敦睦 location given to you matches exactly with your photo address. Could it be 南陽 (南阳 simplified) Nanyang instead? Was photo from a headstone?

Hi lachinatown, Sorry for taken such a long time to respond, and yes the photo was taken directly from the tombstone and 朝陽 Chaoyang is the correct village, as to where my father-in-law was from. And thanks for the information on 敦睦里 as a unique name, while, 朝陽 Chaoyang is more common. I'll proceed with the information provided by Matthew and you and go from there. Thank very much for both your time and help. Ming. Read more: siyigenealogy.proboards.com/post/new/2789#ixzz5SYykQ8C6
