Hi Matthew,
There is a chance I am your distant cousin as I'm also an Au (in my 40s) and my father was born in Donghu, Kaiping. One of my uncles also immigrated to St. John's, ran a Chinese restaurant there (on Water Street) up until in the 80s and brought his family (and my cousins) to Toronto where most of the family had moved.
I went back to the village in 2012 and am planning to go again. I've asked my father (in his 70s) if he recognizes your father's name and I'll see if he can figure out how we are related and how we may be able to help.
Regards. Jason
