Hi I am hoping that someone can help me here. I am Malaysian born but had resided in Australia since 1979. I am trying to trace family history. I have lots of info from my Maternal side but hardly any from my Paternal side. My surname is WONG and my Paternal grandfather was from Sunwui County in Guandong. I have been given a name of a village (but I am not sure) Just wondering if someone can help. I am a banana, cannot read or write Chinese but speak cantonese. Here is a JPG image of a name one of my old relative wrote down for me. I believe it may be the name of a village. Can someone confirm

The Chinese is of a village. No such village on the village database for Wong and Sunwui.
It is located around here: Pengjiang Qu, Jiangmen Shi, Guangdong Sheng, China 22.680774, 113.030193

When a village is so small, most likely you will not able to find on a map. I would look for Sha Fu 沙富 (the first two Chinese Characters in the writing.)

Hi alanwong, I think you have located the correct 沙富 Shafu (Sar Foo) - it should be a major nearby village which your ancestral village 方井里 Fangjingli (Fong Cheng Lay) identifies itself with. If we look at the Village Database index page for the 鄉 Heung (rural region) in which Shafu is found, we see that there are two 黃 Wong villages - 黃井頭里 Wong Cheng Tau Lay and 黃家里 Wong Ka Lay: villagedb.friendsofroots.org/display.cgi?level=Heung&id=294. It may be that 方井里 Fong Cheng Lay (village name which you have provided) and 黃井頭里 Wong Cheng Tau Lay (village found in index) refer to the same hamlet.

Hi JasonWu
That is great news for me. Thank you so much. I am waiting for my 84 year old uncle to confirm a few details. What you have given me makes sense. I really hope that this Sar Foo is in fact the township my ancestral village is associated with
Thank you

I had a friend from China do a search using baidu.com for 沙富 (Sar Foo Village) and apparently the village name is now Fumei (富美村). What advice can any of you give to help me find out if this village is what I am looking for?

What advice can any of you give to help me find out if this village is what I am looking for? I am planning a trip to Guangdong next year and I would like to visit this village. It will be a discovery trip but will be great if someone who had experienced this type of trip to give me some pointers. 1) Any recommendation on how to travel to remote areas. The village is about an hour by car from Guangzhou. 2) Can I hire a car with driver? If so can anyone recommend someone or get me in contact with someone Any help will be much appreciated

Hi alanwong, I have a distant relative in the New York area who is from Fu Mei. He is in his early 80s now and left Fu Mei as a young boy and never returned. He speaks English and has an extensive family in the US. His family surname is Yee, not Wong. Here is the google map location. goo.gl/maps/hNmEDCZsREew5t6G6
