Good day,
I am looking for the earliest family weapon or coat of arms of the Lim family tree or the last Shang king where the first Lim peron originated from and also the family weapon or coat of arms of the first Zhou King. Can anybody help me with that?
And does anybody know where the Chinese 2 headed snake originates from? Thank you so much.

Hi Gracelim, What I can provide you is the coat of arm (tuteng 图腾) for surname Lin/Lim (林) and as given below. As to the ancestry to the first Lin/Lim (林), I attach below the chart as designed and constructed by my first cousin once removed, Stephen Lim. Descriptions are all in Chinese. If you ancestry is from Fujian province and descended from one of the Jiumu (九牧), I should be able to provide you the chart down to them. Philip Tan

Hi Philip, wow, thank you very much for the coat of arms for the surname Lim. Is it possible that you translate the Chinese text for me? Can you give me some background to what all the symbols in the coat of arms mean? And, wow, thank you very much also for the chart to the first Lim. My family lived in Amoy and they were from my dad's dad side (4 generations before him). That's all I know.
sincerely, Grace

Hi Grace, Sorry, I would not be able to help you in translating the Chinese text as I am illiterate in Chinese, and therefore not able to read and write in Chinese. You said your family lived in Amoy. Is your family living there now or your ancestry is from Amoy? If your family is not in Amoy, where are you now located? In any case, if your ancestry originated from Amoy, now referred to as Xiamen, you need to narrow down further the particularly location where your ancestry is from, should you be interested in locating your ancestral records (zupu or jiapu) and from it trace back your ancestry as far back as it could provide. Xiamen is a big city managed as a sub-provincial covering the districts of Huli (湖裡), Siming (思明), Jimei (集美), Tong'an (同安), Haicang (海滄) and Xiang'an (翔安). My guess is that your ancestry is likely descended from one of the Nine Dragons (Jiumu (九牧)) or from their cousin. The chart below shows the ancestry from Lin Lu (林禄) (289 AD-356AD), the first Lin/Lim (林) who settled in Fujian province, done to Jiumu (九牧). The grave of Lin Lu (林禄) is located at惠安泉港區塗岒鎮九龍崗. Stephen Lim and I had visited the grave some years ago. Mazu (媽祖), the goddess and patroness of the sea among the Chinese, is descended from the 6th Dragon Lin Yun (林蘊). Her name is Lin Moniang (林默娘). Philip

Hi Philip,
Thank you for the chart and all the interesting information. I will study that. My dad's family lives in Indonesia and I live in the Netherlands with my parents. My dad was the 4th generation of Lim in Indonesia. The family came from Amoy. If I am correct, the person who went from Fujian province to Batavia,Indonesia is Lim Thay Po (Lim Pho.

Hi, I forgot my niece recently went to China to follow a course in Chinese language. She was able to translate the text in the coat of arms of the Lim family. Here is what she said the text is saying: This figure is the totem of the surname Lin (此= this | 图 = figure | 为 = for (serves as) | 林 = forest| 姓 = surname | 图腾 = totem) The totem is the family weapon of the old generation (图腾 = totem | 是 = is | 古代 = ancient | 氏 = generation | 族 = family/tribe | 的 = from | 族徽 = family/weapon[for family]) The dongyi branch (most likely it’s not the first, but it is the most important) is called Lin Fang (东夷 = Dongyi (east barbarian) | 一 = 1, first | 支 (family) branch | 称 = named ( suit) | 林方 = Lin Fang (forest square (as in location), After they moved to the south, they were called Chen 南 = south | 迁 = move | 后 = after | 称 = called | "郴" = Chen (the letters for Lin 林 and Chen 郴 resemble a lot) Lin Yi is comparable to Cao 林义 = Lin Yi (forest justice) | 与 = versus | 曹 = Cao (surname) 近似 = comparable to ( 近 nearby, 似 like) 2 straight trees beside each other like a forest (二 = 2 | 建 = straight up | 木 = wood/tree | 并立 = side by side | 为 = serves as | 林 = forest Here you find more about Lin translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=zh-CN&u=https://baike.baidu.com/item/%25E6%259E%2597%25E5%25A7%2593&prev=search Baidu is the google of China, this website is originally in Chinese language, but you can let google translate translate it for you into English language.

Hi, my name is Jeffrey Lin. I visited Taiwan in 2012 with my parents to meet my extended family and was given a book with Chinese characters that dates all the way back to the Zhou Dynasty, at the time of the first Lin. The book is very difficult to translate as a lot of the characters have changed over time, but my father was able to find someone to help translate a small portion of it. I don’t see a way to post pics on this site, otherwise, I would post images of the book and the work that has already been done to translate it. I would like to get some help to learn about my ancestry and to meet some of the descendants who are still living today.

Hello Philip, another Lim person here. I was looking for the coat of arms for the family name and found this discussion. Thanks for the information and the files you attached. Is the tuteng for Lim you provided copyrighted or can I use it for personal purposes (printed on personal stationary, etc.)?
