Hello,
My name is Connie. I am from Auckland New Zealand.
I am so happy I found this site.
I am at a stand still in finding my ancestors from Guangzhou Shunde, Guangdong, China. I am looking for information on my 2x Great Grand-dad and his parents. He goes by the name of, "Ah Mu". We have no proof of his real name or his family. Some recollection stories from his son, that approximately in 1857, not far from where a British Merchant Marine Ship was docked, a group of children played along the banks of a river in China. When it was time for the sailors to return to their ship, a 3-year-old boarded with them. (My Great 2x Grand-dad) Soon after, he became known as Ah Mu.
According to family versions there are stories told.
1: He was named after the river Amur, but could not pronounce Amur, hence the name, Ah Mu.
2: He was found floating unconscious in the Amur River forms the boundary between China (Heilongjiang province) and Russia (Siberia). He was rescued by a certain skipper.
3: He was born in Canton and grew up around the water front. At the age of 12, he left on and English Merchant Vessel.
This story of 2x Great Great-dad is consistent in the next phase of his life. He grew up as a British sailor and learned the skills of a wheelwright, blacksmith and carpenter. He became a British Citizen and possesses a British Passport.
In his 20s, the ship he was on, docked in Western Samoa, and there, he settled and married 3 times before he died. He was born in 1854 in Guangzhou, Shunde, Guangdong, China, and died 5 AUG 1910 Pesega, Upolu, Samoa. I absolutely do not know where to begin since we don't know his real name, only the place he was born, where he was found, and his life as a British sailor thereafter.
He was buried in Samoa. There are no Chinese characters on his gravestone, no Chinese Characters related to him at all. Please help! I am at a loss.
Thank you in advance
Connie
