Hello - I am conducting research for my partner on their family. They are based in Brunei and immigrated there in the 1910s-early 1920s, their surname is 洪 (Ang). I'm trying to locate the ancestral village back in China here is what I know:
Ching Hwa Ang (洪清華) is the name of the progenitor. He was born about 1910 in China and immigrated with his family to Brunei. He married at least two, maybe three time, with the name of his wife in which my partners family descends being Kong Que Li (呂孔雀). She died ca. May 1988 in BSB, Brunei at the age of about 78.
I'm curious if there are any major records I could consult in Brunei to help me to determine the exact ancestral location of 洪清華. I understand that the family may have come from Amoy Island (Xiamen Island).
Any advice, thoughts, or help would be appreciated.

If the Ang descendants are still residing in Brunei, they might check with the local Fook Chew Association (福州公會) historic membership records. There is a good chance that 洪清華 or the 洪 family members served on the board of directors. After the Japanese invasion of Borneo, children would resume their education in Chinese schools.
If the family lived in Seria, Kaula Belait, or Brunei Town, the schools might still retain their graduation record which would state the ancestral county (貫籍) of the student. Hope it helps!

I have learnt that Hong 洪 families in Seria, Brunei came from Hoi Nam Island 海南 (now the Province of Hainam). Historically Hai Nam Island is know as 儋洲. Hope it helps!
