We have an ancestor who listed his birthplace as "Ishangshing, Kwan tung, China." He was born in 1884. I haven't been able to find any villages that sound like or look like it could be translated into something similar to "Ishangshing.'' Any thoughts? I am assuming that it might be near by Xintang, Zengcheng, Guangdong.

I have come to the conclusion that there isn't a Ishangshing village. My best guess is that the "Ishangshing" is what the scribe hear when the interview for immigration was performed and that Ishangshing might be a district or region instead. It sort of sounds like it would be a "3rd district" in Canton, China. Thanks to all who looked at the email.

Hi - I think it must be Jungseng (now Zheng cheng)

Thank you Helen. I have always been told that we were from Jungseng and the tombstones confirmed it. I had also heard that a lot of information on the US Census was written incorrectly because a lot of people were not literate ( either the informer and the transcribers). So, if you can't find your ancestors, try soundex or alternate spellings. I never thought about it being "Zheng cheng" until you mentioned this. I was going by what was written in the census and immigration papers.
