Geoff, My English was so poor back then(am still struggling), the boss Noel Ingram, had to teach me how to say Fill'er up with super, sir? There were many, like Atlantic, Golden Fleece, Total, later on Amoco. Like Esso, they all dropped off like flies. Once I put truck grade oil in a Dodge Phoenix. I agonised whether to tell or not to tell. I decided not to. A wise move I think. It was 3/3- for a gallon of super, and the same price for a packet of Rothmans. 33cents, folks.

Douglas,
You probably worked long hours & really earned your money as a petrol pump jockey. Battery water, oil & tyre pressure were checked more regularly when there was service. There isn't any "service" now, just petrol stations with self service bowsers.
Do you remember the Golden Fleece service station on the corner of Dixon & Goulburn Streets (in the heart of Sydney's Chinatown)? It was owned by 2 brothers, members of another long established ABC (Aust born chinese) family. Their ancestor had a business down at the Rocks, overlooking picturesque Sydney harbour. What a prime position near Circular Quay. Many chinese passed thru his shop on their way to the goldfields to find their fortune or on their journey back to China.
