Hi all,
I've hit another dead end in trying to work out a village name.
The village is in Taishan, and the name, as written in Australian sources is:
Hor Chung Hong Li Toon
This was written down as pronounced by someone who spoke Taishan dialect (ie I know that 'toon' is 'cun' ´å). I don't have characters for the name.
Another village mentioned in the same source was written as Wang Sui Loong Hong Toon, which I have already worked out from the Village Database:
County ̨ɽToishanT¨¢i Sh¨¡n toi4 saan1 06691472 Area 2 Heung ™MË®àlWang Sui Heung H¨¦ng Shui Xi¨¡ng waang4 seoi2 hoeng1 2897-3055-6763 VillageýˆÌÁ Lung Tong L¨®ng T¨¢ng lung4 tong4 7893-1048
Several years ago I was taken to this village and confirmed that many family members from that village had connections with Australia.
The family name of Long Tang village is Liu/Lau „¢, and Hong Li Toon also has connections to Australian Lius.
Any help would be much appreciated. Both villages have connections to the Sam Yik company which was responsible for major land-clearing and ringbarking enterprises in the Riverina area of NSW in the late 19th century.
Also, if anyone could find Long Tang village/Hengshui on a map, that would be excellent!
Thanks, Kate
P.S. You might have to chance the encoding to Simplified Chinese GB to read the characters...

Kate, This is a guess - I found "Chung Hong Lay" in the Village Database and we know that "toon/cun" follows - so, "Hor" maybe an extra part of the village name used by the villagers. I could not find Chung Hong Lay, however, I did find its nearest market town " Li Chuen" 裡村 - which is in Kaiping / Hoiping county. This is supposed to be a Chow village - please check with your source. Henry

In Taishan, under Tau Tung Heung 斗洞鄉, there is a Chung Hong village 中巷 and a Hong Li village 巷裡 both are Ng 伍 family surname.
Hor = 河 ?

Thanks both for those thoughts, and for the map location of Long Tang village.
I might try and see if I can get in touch with any old local Taishan folk here to see if they can offer any thoughts.
