Hi everyone I am hoping someone maybe able to help me with ANY information on the Jan Men Toon village. My Gung Gungs family name was Louie, and he migrated to New Zealand in the 1940s?. He never spoke much about his child hood in China and when he passed away it was lost with him. I have manged to get his village name from another Chinese lady who also came from the same village but like my Gung Gung doesn't talk about the old days much. Sooooo please if anyone can help me I would be ever so grateful.
Thanks Max Yee Malcolm

Hi Max, Welcome to the Forum. Please ask this Chinese lady to write the Chinese name of the ancestral village of your maternal grandfather and also write the Chinese name of the nearest large market town. Chinese village names are not unique and it makes it much easier to locate the village if you can also provide the name of the nearest large market town. Please post the digital photo of these Chinese names and/or digital photo of the gravestone of your maternal grandfather's (gung gung) gravestone on the Forum, so our Chinese literate Forum members can assist. Here are instructions for how to post the images/photos: siyigenealogy.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=comment&action=display&thread=421Once we can locate your ancestral village and if it is located within the SiYi region, you may want to consider hiring my Taishan nephew to travel to your ancestral village to confirm that this is your ancestral village, identify village relatives, and try to find and copy your family/clan genealogy book. This genealogy book is a family treasure that will provide you with your family lineage and also serves as a source to verify that these particular people in the village are your "true" relatives. Please see my nephew's references: siyigenealogy.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=names&action=display&thread=821&page=1Henry

Where in New Zealand did your Goon live? The Louie family may have been from Bak Shek, Zengcheng. Did he speak Cantonese (Bak wah) or Si Yip/Taishan wah? What is your Goon's full name - Chinese and English? where is he buried? Does his gravestone have Chinese Characters? Who were his friends? What did he do? Was he involved in any organisations?I'm in N Z so may be able to assist - with a few more clues. What age was he at death and when did he die?

Hi again Helen a few more answers to your questions........ yes he did speak Cantonese (Si Yip) His full name was Louie Yee in english and Yee Louie in Chineses,he died 6th July 1992 at the age of 72 and is buried in Gisborne he was not involved in any organisations that I know of apart from the local Chineses community. There are some Chinese Characters on his gravestone but they are very basic I am planning to post a photo of my Buck Gungs head stone as it has much more detial.
