Probably, when he migrated to Malaysia, his name was not entered into the zupu. Do you know if the names of your maternal gf & ggf were the birth names or their marriage names? Generally the names in a genealogy are according to the marriage name & also by the birth name if they were unmarried at the time of the compilation of the genealogy book. Since this zupu was recently published as a compilation of the Huang clan - a researcher may have to visit both the original & new villages to check the original village genealogy. Another reason why your maternal ggf's name is not in the 2011 Huang genealogy is because - this might be for the "new" Huangchong village and did not include the recent ancestors during the past 50 -100 years from the original village. If a researcher went to the original Huangchong village - the name may be in the original genealogy book for this village. You can probably buy both copies of the history & zupu from My China Roots & they can send a researcher to the villages to conduct more detailed research. Both books in PDF versions have been OCR processed so they are searchable electronically, but, you can highlight the narratives in the history book & paste them into any of the online Chinese translators to get an English translation. By the way, your ancestral roots in quite a famous area - Yamen en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_YamenI hope this helps. Henry

Hi Fay Chee, Several romanizations for the Tan Clan [ 譚 / 谭 ]: see rank 56 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_common_Chinese_surnames "Tan" is the official Pinyin romanization, however, "Tan" is the Min Nan romanization for the "Chen" [ 陳 / 陈 ] rank # 5 Our dear friend Philip Tan is from the "Chen" clan. I always refer to the Chinese character for a Chinese surname. Henry

Hi Fay Chee,
So glad I could help.
Tan Shi is the Tan clan - set next to the name probably indicates that he was adopted from the Tan clan.
My maternal grandfather was adopted - in the older 1937 copy of the Lee Zupu, the annotation said that he was the son of a man, who was the brother of the man who adopted him. But, in the 2018 Taishan Lee 7 volume bookset - there is nothing mentioned about his adoption. Since this larger Taishan county Lee bookset is a compilation of zupus for probably 500 Lee villages - they did not include the annotation to try & keep the bookset at a manageable size, whereas, in the Lee genealogy for just several Lee villages that included my maternal grandfather's village, they had annotations with much more details.
This is why I always advise people to try and get hold of the actual village genealogy book - which would have all the details.

Hi Fay Chee,
I do not not there are any hard rules about visiting the gravesite. Most of it was what I remember when I was with my dad when he went with the family association on their annual Qingming at Evergreen Cemetery in Brooklyn.
This is what I do - I bow 3 times with the unlit candles & incense sticks( 3 at a time ) and bow 3 times after they are lit. I usually give my dad at least 2 rounds of whiskey by pouring out the little cups. Looks like you have the big can for burning.
In addition to what you mentioned about the food possibilities, we usually bring a couple large boxes of dim sum - we have a nice picnic afterwards & talk about our parents with my siblings.
It is fun to buy the paper money, cars, houses, clothes, watches, radios, TVs to burn & send them to my parents.
