Hi forum members I am absolutely loving my trip. I am on the fourth day of my Yangtze cruise. Will be arriving in Chongqing tomorrow, then to Guilin, Xian, Beijing, then to Hong Kong and Shenzhen area, where I will meet with family that we found thanks to the help of people on this forum. I can't wait to see the village my granparents came from and I can't thank you all enough!! Cannot access the forum from here. If anyone knows how please let me know. Also here is the link to my blog (which I can't access either so my wife Helen is updating for me)(there is a link on the blog to pictures) rickschinatrip.blogspot.com/ for some reason now you have to allow popups

I am so envious. I was there June 2009, but your trip is longer than my 3 weeks. Have fun. The blog and photos are great.

hi harc or his ghost writer
Cannot access the forum from here. If anyone knows how please let me know. Also here is the link to my blog (which I can't access either so my wife Helen is updating for me)
My friends in China uses VPN (virtual private network) to access facebook, etc. Google VPN and it will provide information. Free VPN are available. Take care of malware as VPN opens a private tunnel of access which malware can burrow in.
Cannot add more info now but get hold of your techno geek who can assist, I have one in Beijing.
Agree with Helen, the blog is inspiring and pictures excellent.

Harc3,
To visit one's ancestral village is a heartfelt awesome feeling of final closure - to come full circle from your ancestor leaving China and your return. It is also a new beginning for you and your village relatives. Don't forget to get copies of the family genealogy book.
Enjoy !

harc3,
here goes, my interpretation:
Reading from Right to Left, Top to bottom Rt: 新塘 Lt: 黃沙頭 both are place names, which I presume you are familiar by now. Middle: 顯廿四世祖 to display 24th generation (presumably with respect to the prime genitor of the clan who transmigrated to the southern province), ie, your uncle is the 24th generation wrt the Wong primegenitor. Extreme Rt: 二零一零年清明 2010 Ching Ming Festival Extreme Lt: 眾子孫敬立 (Headstone) Installed by sons and grandsons (ie decendends) 考黃公錦樂Formal address to an old departed gentleman: 考 Surname: 黃 Given names: 錦樂 生于一九一二年一月Born: 1912, January 终于一九九五年八月Died: 1995 August 妣沈氏婉媚Formal address to wife of your uncle, Maiden surname: 沈 her given names 婉媚 生于一九一二年八月 Born: 1912, August 终于一九六九年十月 Died: 1969, Octorber

Hi Harc3,
While you are there, besides getting copies of the family genealogy book as wisely advised by Henry, do find out the tradition as to the number of vegetarian meals that the Huang/Wong (üS) of your family there is supposed to have during Lunar New Year. This would indicate from which of the three wives of Qiao Gong (Ç͹«) that your branch of Huang/Wong is descended from. The Generation Poem could also provide the information.

Thank you to all of the people on the boards for helping make this dream trip come true. The blog and pics will always be a treasured memory but cannot replace actually being there. Family is SO important. I will be going back again except next time will be with my family (wife and daughter) Thanks again to you all!!!! On my way home today

Rick,
Thank you very much for sharing your journey with this forum and on your blogspot. I finally joined this forum after years of lurking.
I know that most Canadians live and die hockey. You made huge sacrifices to go to China during the Stanley Cup playoffs. God bless you.
