One of the great consequences of China's modernization in the past 30 years is a growing group of young urban professionals, or yuppies. Almost all are college educated, good paying jobs, regular working hours, either single or married with no children, perhaps even living with parents; in other words, they have large disposable income. All over China, they are getting into leisure hobbies, they form photography clubs and outdoor clubs, etc. To overseas Chinese searching for their ancestral roots, the outdoor clubs are important resources that should be tapped into. Their members have frequent outings into the rural villages. They are technically savvy, equipped with GPS, internet connected, etc. I think they are as familiar, if not more, with locations of villages as any government agency. Many of the groups can be easily found by their website or bulletin board, by googling location of interest and outdoor activities " 户外活动". Here is an example of a bicycle group in Taishan and their recent outing, a tour of diaolous and western-style buildings in Taishan and Kaiping. The narratives are in Chinese, but you can enjoy the photos just the same. www.ts-bike.com/viewthread.php?tid=3862&extra=page%3D1&page=1

Very interesting. Especially for me, coming from that region.
Thank you for the posting. A good find. It would be nice if the site is in English as well, for those of us who have limited or no Chinese.
