Greetings!
The Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco is pleased to introduce to you a brand new genealogy resource! The In Search of Roots Village Database, at www.rootsdb.org, is a unique new website that focuses on capturing and sharing the genealogical research of young Chinese Americans through the In Search of Roots program.
For twenty years, the In Search of Roots program has helped hundreds of young people research the rich and exciting history that has shaped them and placed them where they are today. Every year since 1991, the program has trained Chinese Americans in the arduous and rewarding tasks of tracing their families' immigration and genealogical histories, and ultimately seeking their ancestral
village homes in an annual pilgrimage to the Pearl River Delta and Chaoshan regions in Guangdong, China.
The In Search of Roots Village Database includes over two hundred personally-visited villages that are the ancestral homes of thousands of Chinese Americans from the days of the California Gold Rush through today.
Many village listings are rich with:
-photos
-first-hand descriptions
-historic clan/surname associations
-interactive GPS map coordinates
-intimate stories and reflections of Roots interns, affectionately called
"Rooters." Each is undeniably changed after the sojourn to the land of his
ancestors.
Chinese and non-Chinese alike can browse the site and learn about the humble beginnings, ambitious dreams, immigration, and assimilation experiences of the only group in U.S. history to be barred from immigration solely because of ethnicity. Researchers of Chinese genealogy can use the site to research
surnames and distinct regional differences within the Pearl River Delta's many counties. We anticipate the database to grow as more information is gathered.
We invite you to browse the site at: In Search of Roots Village Database, and help us understand your user experience by completing a short survey here: rootsdb.org/survey.
Thanks,
Christine DeVillier
