The group of organizers from Oct-2010's Oakland Chinese American Family History Conference is planning a new mini-event:
Are you curious about what is available at the Oakland Regional Family History Center that is part of the Church of Latter-Day Saints but haven't had the chance to check it out? Many of us are, too. Come learn from Marge Bell of the center and our own Kay Speaks and Christine DeVillier as they tell us how they have used the resources of the center and its Salt Lake City parent to research their Chinese roots. Kay will be covering research techniques at the center and Christine will talk about using the FamilySearch catalog and Chinese databases. All are welcome to attend - you don't have to be a church member. As an indication of the depth of experience what will be presented, see Christine's reply to the post Re: Search for ancestors from Shantou, Guangdongclick
Time & Place:
November 12. 2010 Oakland Regional Family History Centerclick 4766 Lincoln Avenue, Oakland, CA 94602, (510) 531-3905. Directionsclick. The Oakland (California) Regional Family History Center is one of the largest and most accessible centers for genealogical research in California.
Schedule:
12 noon - BYO Lunch to talk stories with our group - bring your discoveries or share any roadblocks you are facing in your research to brainstorm research options.
1:30 to 3:30 p.m. - Orientation to the center by Marge Bell, examples of research by Kay Speaks and Christine DeVillier, experienced genealogists.
RSVP to Kay at kayspeaks@gmail.com. The classroom has 70 seats and about 60 computers, so we will take the first 60 respondents, and then have a wait list. Cost: None! When you respond to Kay, if you wish, please list your City of Residence, Village, surnames searching, etc. Also, list the names of each of the attendees. The center will have available a number of Chinese literate docents. Depending on RSVP response, we may limit the number of attendees by family.
The California Genealogical Society mantra has always been that most research is done at libraries, archives, and courthouse. Learn how to use the Oakland FHC archives. The image below is attributed to the CGS
