Xue Ma Li 薛瑪莉
The surname Xue 薛 doesn't have any special meaning. It was name of a state over 2000 years ago. Kings used to reward individuals by giving them land and bestow upon them a new surname which was the name of the land.
Ma 瑪 is from ma nao 瑪瑙 which is a gem stone. Li 莉 is from mo li 茉莉 is is jasmine, a flower. Both characters are often used as feminine names.

The best way to quickly and effectively learn a second language is to live, work and study in the native country. Unfortunately that is not possible for most people. Learning a second language can allow us to understand another culture, communicate with friends and loved ones in their native language, excel in the business realm, or even prepare for a long vacation. If you are lucky enough to be moving to or living in China, we can still help you! www.learnchinese1on1.com

I would like my brother to give Chinese names to his two sons, but I cannot find out how to do this. One website said to ask someone who is Chinese for good names, so here I am. I think the names have to be in the correct generation......
Generation 1: Our Granddad name: Yau Tak Seto
Generation 2: Our Dad name: Kai Yip Seto
Generation 3: My brother name: Wing Lew Seto Our half brother name: Yan Pui
Generation 4: Brother's sons: Oldest named- Troy Seto on Sept 29 (?1969) 2nd named- Anthony Seto on Nov 26 (?1970)
Yan Pui's son named: Shik Seto
Brother's daughter: Miyoshi Seto
Yan Pui's daughter: Chun Seto
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you, Fay Chee

Fay Chee, a bright pearl and a pearl of wisdom, I once put in a piece about choosing a Chinese name but I can't remember under which topic.
As you know there isn't a pool of names to choose from. Choosing a name is an art, a reflection of your aspiration or hopes for the child.
Ask laohuaqiao to give your brother help.

Yes Douglas, I also remember reading about it somewhere here, but cannot find it now.
So I did some research via Google and found the following:
Name Order-Chinese names traditionally consist of three parts: the Clan Name, and two given names. The Clan Name (surname) appears first. Thus Yip Sang, a prominent Chinese-Canadian pioneer, would have been "Mr. Yip", since Yip was his surname.
Note: When we did our first visit to dad's grave, we asked a nearby man to tell us what the chinese characters on his tombstone said. He said 'Yip Kai Seto" and that our real Chinese last name was "Yip". We laughed after he left, but now I see that he could have been right. Seems weird that 'Yip' could be a last name, but what do I know......obviously I know very little.
Given Names-One of the two given names was a "generation name". The generation name was usually, though not always, shared by all male or all female siblings of the same generation. The other was a personal name.
" Given names are chosen based on a range of factors, including possession of pleasing sound and tonal qualities, as well as bearing positive associations or a beautiful shape. Given names resonant of qualities which are perceived to be either masculine or feminine are frequently given, with males being linked with strength and firmness and females with beauty and flowers. Two-character mings may be chosen for each character's separate meaning and qualities, but the name remains a single unit which is almost always said together even when the combination no longer 'means' anything."
We'll try and come up with something and then ask laohuaqiao for approval. Fay Chee

Put that together with your surname, your Chinese name would be 薛玛莉 thank you for helping sir! so this will be my chinese name from now on? It could be if you want it to be! Much like how some immigrants come to N America and take on an English name of their choosing, if you don't have a Chinese name I'm sure you can just choose whichever one you like. Just do some research on the meaning and such.
