I received the following translation for mrs. Quong Hing's headstone; Mrs. Quong Hing 1861-1926 Left column - Died Republic of China 15th year October 29 Middle column - Luo Wu Gui Lian Grave Right column - Born on lucky year lucky month lucky day, lucky time Would this translation be Cantonese or Mandarin? What is odd (if translation is correct), is that the headstone says she died on Oct 29, 15 year (Republic of China, founded on Jan. 1, 1912 + 15 years=1927), but I have a copy of her death certificate which says that she died Dec. 1, 1926. Any other clues/information you can glean from this headstone? Thanks, Lori Attachments:

1912 was Republic year 1, therefore year 15=1926 (1911+15). This year 2011, is Republic year 100 (100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China).

Date on the tombstone, 29th day of the 10th month, probably is the lunar calendar date which is different from the Western/solar calendar.

Thanks mugenpower168 & laohuaqiao - Do you know, would this translation be Cantonese or Mandarin or is there no difference? The reason I ask, is that the historical society has asked for help with the translation (as well as any additional information that I can provide) and I would like to honor her with correct information there, as well as on the Find A Grave website. Also curious about the "lucky year, month, day, time" reference. Would that refer to a specific year, month, day, time? I have only her birth year (no month or day), because I have a copy of her death certificate (assuming the info. on the death certificate is correct).

Luo Wu Gui Lian is the Mandarin translation.
I think to some the tradition is to include day of birth on the headstone. In this case, the day of birth of Mrs. Quong Hing is not known, then whatever it is it must have been a lucky year -month-day.

Information on a death certificate is usually provided by the living - and if there was no actual documentation, it could inveritably be just a guess on someone's behalf. That sort of information is given to the funeral director - and no one at that time has time to genuinely research the facts.

Thanks for the info/clarification. I shall pass it on to the historical society.
