Does anyone know what the Nam Hang Hok Luk Association 南坑學祿同鄉會 is? In my large Wong genealogy book, I can trace my earliest ancestors to the part that says , and this makes total sense from what my grandma told me her ancestral area was in Taishan, Sek Fa heung, Nam Hang heung. But she didn't say Hok Luk, though it does say that in the book. She is deceased so I don't have anyone else to ask about this Hok Luk part. I see in google maps there is a Hok Luk (Xuelu) school, and the book says Hok Luk Fong, like Hok Luk Area, so I am pretty sure this is an area/place name. Does anyone know about their association, and if it is primarily Wongs that are members? The listing for the place is found in the Chinese language yellow pages online at www.singtaoyp.com/listing.php?page=3&id=219&pid=5: NAM HUNG HOK LUK ASS'N 南坑學祿同鄉會; 20-24 Vinton Court SF 415-982-3005 It looks like Nam Hang is full of Wongs and not much else according to village database, www.c-c-c.org/villagedb/display.cgi?level=Subheung&id=65 so I wonder why the association is called Nam Hang but not associated with any surname in its title? I am aware of surname associations and place name associations, just wondering the background on this association if anyone has experience with it. I am hoping I can find something about my grandmother's uncle, who should be from Nam Hang, wondering if this association is the right place to go. thanks!

Christine,
Nam Hang Hok Luk Association is a clan association, as oppose to a surname association.
The Wong's are by far the largest surname group in Taishan. The estimate is one out of every five Taishanese is a Wong, or close to 200,000. Nam Hang Wong's is one of the many Wong clans in Taishan.
I think Nam Hang should be called a bao 堡, though I don't know if Nam Hang people use that term. A bao refers to both the region and the clan.
Hok Luk maybe is equivalent to the 堂 name, or branch name, as seen in other surname groups. Perhaps it's synonymous with Nam Hang, or could be sub-clan of Nam Hang.
My maternal grandmother was from Nam Hang. Whenever I go back to my own village I pass through Nam Hang and can see Hok Luk Elementary School, aka Nam Hang Elementary School, from a distance.
Yes, I think you should inquire within Nam Hang Hok Luk Association to trace your family history.
I'll try to find out some more on the origin of Hok Luk name. Let me know if you have other questions.

Laohuaqiao, Thank you so much for this information! I will go inquire at the association today, if they are open today. I did see Hok Luk elementary school on the map as well. Crossing my fingers today goes well! Thanks, Christine
